Ruger Precision Rimfire

should be a great trainer for any guys with a ruger precision rifle:

"Big-Gun bolt throw adjustment enables shooters to change from a rimfire 1-1/2'' bolt throw to a short-action centerfire 3'' bolt throw, reducing the chance of short-stroking your bolt in competition."

I’m very intrigued. I can see getting one once the initial fever dies down on them.

I have a rpr In 6.5 but the rim fire just looks ugly to me. I'm about to buy a .22 bolt gun but can't decide between the cz 455 and the savage mark 2 fv-sr.

@hlpressley tried both with interesting results. Maybe he'll chime in...

I am really liking this thing. It's a neat little design. I'd like to try it.

My results were unpopular and not much appreciated by the Czech fanboys. I personally have no preference in brands, I’m certainly not “brand loyal”, I just call things as they are. My CZ shot decent, just not as good as my Savage. The CZ has a new home now while the Savage has a forever home in my safe. This decision was based solely on results. I didn’t care which one was better, but one was, and it wasn’t close.

I have already preordered one of the Ruger RPR Rimfire rifles with my FFL. If and when it outperforms the Savage, I will be happy to say so.

That's why we like you Harold, you say what you mean!

Once you decide to sell it let me know :D

I have a FVSR, no experience with the 455.

I want to check out the Ruger Rimfire Target, since it takes 10/22 Mags

Ive got a CZ 455 and love it. Accurate out of the box, YoDave trigger kit (just springs and sear shims for $20) and life is good ... better than good actually! I’ve heard good things about the Savage but no experience with them. They also definitely have their fan clubs just like the CZs.

Look forward to hearing a Ruger report!

Will be watching this curiously when some real world accuracy numbers come out. One of the reasons that I bought my CZ 455 was the accuracy that was already there vs. paying to make something more accurate and ending up at the same place accuracy wise for the same at least but most likely more money. Would have to consider the Ruger vs. new stock to get to the tacticool spot if that's what one was looking for. Also, if going for new there's the CZ tacticool and precision rimfires also ... so many good choices. This new Ruger would of course be perfect as a trainer rifle if you already shoot the big brother RPR ... and I've got to say that I've been eyeballing those also ... too many good toys available and too few $$$ ... ha - back to work! LOL

If they'd make these new rimfire actions compatible with 10/22 barrels that would be awesome.

Because for one thing then there would be some more really nice precision barrels made to put on a 10/22 :)
I know there are some good ones now, but it wouldn't hurt for sure.

Mine arrived today, first impression is good. It's heavier than I expected, the trigger is very crisp and breaks clean. I removed the spring to change the bolt throw to 3". I am planning on taking it to the range this weekend.

Did you have to special order or are these in gun stores now?

No, I was hoping to go today but never made it, I did shoot a couple of rounds in the back yard, the trigger is great on it.

I played with one at a local gun shop. It felt pretty good. More solid that I was expecting Nose heavy but I think a scope would help with that. The cam lever lock on the stock is easy to use and offers a good bit of adjustment. They had one come in and it sold in less than 30 minutes. They said that there's a 8 person waiting list for them that started this morning. That thing would be fricken sweet with an integral suppressor on there!

Dang I wish I'd known about this. I've got some ammo that my CZs really love. I have a rule when it comes to rimfire precision rifles. I try no less than 20 different types of ammo, and even then I do my best to try several different lot numbers.

You ever get another precision rimfire rifle that isn't shooting right for you, please let me know and I'll give you 1k rounds of some really good stuff you can try out. Rimfire rifles usually have one type they shoot better than anything else.

And as you might expect, it is rarely something you can get at Walmart. Usually some European stuff. But man, I've shot several of those Savages (and I own one) and the least accurate CZ i have will out do it. But only if I use the right ammo.

We need to shoot precision rimfires together. That's my jam right there. I'm much better at that discipline than the fumbling around I do trying to shoot steel.

If that last part is true, I def don't want to shoot precision with you then. You don't do much fumbling.

Sadly it is true. Though I rarely shoot any Precision matches.

I bought my first CZ bolt gun 11 years ago. It was so much fun to shoot. We'd go to the range and shoot tiny little targets all day. When I first got it all I had was the factory 5 round magazine. Still didn't stop me from shooting 750 rounds per session.

Then we got suppressed rifles and shot even more. It is a hoot.

Rimfire steel is relatively new for me. Started it in 2015 and still feel like a noob much of the time.

Curiosity question; Did notice your CZ getting better the more you shot it?

I purchased a LH American 452 when they first came out and there was a noticable improvement after running 4-5 bricks of ammo through it. Almost all of the first ammo shot through it was Wolf Match target.

Yes, I did notice that. It's been the same with all of them. That being said, all of them have what I call the "progression".

It starts when I clean them. Had to buy a special Dewey rod that is .20 caliber because the CZ chamber is so dang tight. But I carefully clean the barrels. Then I shoot them. It takes about 50 rounds or so for the barrel to get "seasoned" so that is shoots well again. Best I can tell, the lubrication on the bullets (and this is also true with Wolf Match Target and Wolf Match Extra) aids accuracy. But it needs to build up a bit before it gets in its happy equilibrium. Once there, it is a tack driver for many rounds. At some point, however, the accuracy will start to degrade. That's how I know it needs to be cleaned again. In this manner the process repeats.

Incidentally, I bought a left handed CZ in Turkish walnut and presented it to a close friend for his birthday.
