trying to decide which rifle to go with during the Carolina Run And Gun 5K.

Course will include barricades to get over, stuff the crawl under and through, obstacles of various types, etc. in addition to just getting around 3+ miles.

Rifle shots out to 400yards.

Options:
- 18" Odin Works heavy barrel, fixed rifle stock, and Burris 1-8x weighs in at about 9.5#. This is the rifle I use for 3 gun matches. I can knock 400yard shots all day long, but it's long and heavy for negotiating the course.

- 10.3" SBR with Ballistic Advantage barrel. Right at 7.25# with Vortex 1-4x. The SBR is light, will sling/carry easily and has been my go to "fun" rifle for a while, so I know it runs. Only problem is that I've never gone past 150yds with it. I'm a bit concerned about making hits at 400yds with the 10.3" barrel.

- 16" PSA Freedom series stainless pencil barrel. 7.1# with vortex 1-4x. is light and less cumbersome and may give me better ballistics than the SBR, but it's my backup rifle that only has ~100 rounds through it.

Thoughts?

I feel like this scenario is perfect for a 14.5" with pinned FH and a nice 1-6... So having said that I'd use your PSA. Could you put the Burris 1-8 on it? If not, time to build a new gun!

I’d see which of choices 2&3 shoot best for you at distance and carry the one you shoot best. I’m contemplating going to it and if I do I’ll be running my 16” bcm.

First I’ve heard of this. When and where? Not that I am in any kind of shape to participate, but would like to be next year.

Depends on your fitness and strength I guess. Use the long rifle if you can hump that for that long.

I'd use one of the lighter ones. I have a 14.5" SBR with 1x4 I'd use. It's light and handy and slings well.

Dave if you're 14.5" is SBR'd, have you considered building a 12.5" upper for it? A lot of the guys on M4C seem to like a 12.5" build over the 10.3" and 11.5", and of course the counter argument is why SBR a gun that only saves you 2" over a comparable 14.5" (with muzzle device of course).

I actually do have a 12.5" carbine gas upper for it. Man, it shoots GREAT, too. Cheap Aero/BA govt profile. Really rigid feeling and amazing performance for its size, imo.
I've also done shorter uppers.
But, my competition style uppers are predicated on at least a 12" handguard, which I require to maintain decent shooting form (not that I have decent shooting form, lol). So, 11.5's and shorter just don't do it for me.
The 14.5" came about as I liked the Faxon Gunner profile on my 18" so decided to try a shorter middy length, and since its an SBR lower, no need to go to 16". The extra 2" lost is just kind of a bonus. It's short enough and doesn't really need to be shorter. Feels great and super handy.

I also wanted a shorter upper that uses adjustable gas and lightweight lomass BCG/buffer like my 18". So, I have two of everything and if a gun goes (or part) down I can use my other or it's spring/buffer/BCG and not have to adjust my gas.

These are all for matches, and not for any kind of "fighting gun" or anything like that. I would likely do something different if that were some kind of requirement in my life, lol. But happily, it's not! These are fun race toys for the range.

The 12.5" is a fixed gas and uses an H2 buffer. I put it together with inexpensive parts I got on sale, so I was quite shocked by how well it does and how accurate it is. It's doesn't look like much, but man its a daisy. Hardly use it though because the 14.5" is soooo damn fun. Its good to have choices! Right now it doesn't have an optic, and I am considering those spendy Vickers fixed sights we were looking at. Or I may go back to a Vortex prism, never should have sold that!

This little guy would be perfect for this run and gun match because its tiny and will cycle anything even with dirt in it.

I'm more concerned with the overall length making the obstacles more difficult to negotiate - 18" barrel, plus 2" brake plus fixed rifle stock vs. SBR with collapsible stock.

A shorter barrel does not mean less accuracy, sometimes it means more. Less velocity though, so if you're shooting widely varying distances there is more correction for drop involved. You probably know this, but I couldn't pass up a chance to sound smart. ;)

Yeah I can see that being a huge issue. That is a loooong rifle!
