Running for Rowan County Wildlife Association BOD

It may be a restriction in the NRA liability insurance that a lot of clubs rely on, no info but would not be surprised.

We don’t use NRA for our insurance.

I think the no NFA stuff is a throwback to when it really was odd to see it.

The FA and .50 BMG likely go back to our old berm system. Plus having neighbors directly down range. The 300 yard berm used to only be about 20’ higher than the firing line. We did a lot of work raising it in the last year or so. We also have some county restrictions where we are grandfathered in and don’t have a lot of working room to make changes.

Topography isn’t our friend either. We are on top of a ridge overlooking the river. So anything that gets off the rifle has has unrestricted flight until gravity takes care of it. That’s one reason we raised the last berm.

I still disagree with it. When and where does it stop? You live next to or close to a firearms range. You will hear noise. Sort of like these people that by houses next to an airport and bi#$h about the planes. But this is just my opinion. And will follow the laws of the club I choose to be a member at.

If it never starts, then it won't need to be stopped. FA is allowed with a letter of permission from the board and that's it.
If you don't care for the rules and regulations (and it sounds like you don't/won't) then find another club to join.
But with any club, a screw up can cause severe consequences that you don't like so maybe you need the wide open spaces of CO, NM or any of the western states where open blasting is allowed and encouraged... just sayin'....

Butter, you answered my question straight and to the point, so you have my vote and my apology for the thread derail.

Now the last comment by me on this:

I have bump stocks for both the AR and the AK. I have fired them a dozen or so times on private property. I know they are allowed at RCWA with the permission and approval of the BOD. I have just never gotten around to attending one of the meetings to seek such permission. But now, I think I will make the time. Now, just where and when did I post anything remotely close to a statement that I do not care about the rules and regulations?

Kinda funny to see people talking about fudds also saying that FA and bump stocks are too dangerous to let just anybody come and shoot, they need to have special permission.

My thoughts exactly. It's like people who say "I'm for the second amendment, but....."

Never said they were dangerous or not, get your facts straight. I don't make the rules the BOD does... Maybe that's why John wants the position.... out...

PS: @Butter if you want the position (and I assume you do) I'll support your decision and cast my vote in your favor....

General thoughts here:

Like Ive said, this wasnt just a spur of the monent decision. It’s actually been coming for a long time. I know the meetings are boring, there’s politics at play, Ill be the youngest one there, ect.

Im not arrogant enought to think that Im going to change any else’s mind. I want to see why decisions are being made and by who. Why is it that the shooting sports are always under attack? Why can a guy not hold a class at the range and be given a reason other than “because the board said so”? Why does the grouchy member belittle another member for practicing in a bay, even though he is being safe and following the rules?

Do you support the special permission rule? And no, you didnt say they were too dangerous, but "the neighbors might complain" seems a little silly if plenty of gunfire is going on already. Further, someone else did mention the danger involved with them.

I used to hold some of my pistol classes (2 person max) at the club but was told it was a liability issue so I stopped... Shotgun is another issue....

If you do get in, find out who did the sweet washboard paving job on the entrance road. Not once, but twice! Every time I go to shoot, I loose .68% of my darn van.

I have that stuff on my road and its hard not to keep it from getting rough. I was surprised they just dont pave it and be done with it. Theres enough money to do it. And if speed becomes an issue, they can put down more speed mountains like the one in front of the clubhouse. I swear, the slower you go on that one the rougher it is

Is there a club/range that presently allows the bump stocks to be used on their property?

My thoughts exactly. It's like people who say "I'm for the second amendment, but....."

Except that the 2nd amendment is a limit on government power, and we are talking about the decisions that a private group of people make about how their private property is used, that depends on the very very real risk and liability they are willing to tolerate. If you can’t tell the difference, you don’t know what the word “right” means.

I am full “shall not be infringed” - private citizens owned artillery and warships in 1780. I would probably draw the line at NBC type weapons.

That doesn’t mean I would allow someone who legally owned a tank or artillery piece to use it on my property.

My thoughts exactly. It's like people who say "I'm for the second amendment, but....."

There is likely no one size fits all reason. Our club has close neighbors. We can’t shoot sporting clays in certain directions because private property is in the fall zone. And you can see houses from the course. We had to buy property after building our skeet field for the same reason. And we have been accuse of having rounds get off the rifle range. Never mind that people have informal ranges on at least 3 properties around us. Don’t let this insulated echo chamber fool you. We have people that would love to shut us down. And it’s been there since 1939. You either figure in risk assessment or you will likely be closing the doors.

And don’t act like all gun owners know what they are doing. We just had a guy shoot wobble trap with #3 Buckshot we are trying to find. Never mind the barriers protecting $25 K worth of traps are not designed for it and that size shot is not allowed on that range.

Yes. People are generally idiots. Even gun people. In some select cases, and you know a few, especially gun people.

Anything you put on a range _will_ get shot. Accidentally and intentionally. Rounds will miss huge berms. NDs will happen. Posted rules and orientation classes? Oops, missed that part.

Bullets go until they hit something. They don’t care about anyone’s rights. The club is responsible for every idiot that shoots there (according to the lawyers :-( ). And for some of the idiot neighbors if they can convince a jury in a suit.

I have officially put myself on the ballot for Board of Directors.

For those that are members, my real name is John Royer. I’m a Sagittarious, dont like long walks on the beach, and I don't like getting caught in the rain unless there is an umbrella or coat around.
Okay; you have my vote. I will also ask my son and a couple of his friends who are members to vote for you.
Do they actually do anything for wildlife?
We don't shoot deer that wander across the rifle range. Those danged deer have zero fear of gunfire.

That explains why you used a different name on our long, rainy, umbrella-less walks on the beach

Have you ever seen the Turkeys wandering in front of the skeet fields?? They actually walk (not run or fly) behind the trap houses which is 15 feet from station 1 and 7..... They don't even flinch if you keep shooting...
Next time you're up there try making the Geese fly off the lake... impossible...

Reading above comments about what gun clubs face, just wanted to throw a few out there......

Neighbor way downrange of a club's trap field heard something hit her shed and called the sheriff's department. Deputy found a bullet hole and heard shooting at the club. Drove over to find 2 teenagers, one of them the son of the club president. One throwing unbroken birds in the air and the other shooting at them with an AK.

Another club -- someone (never found) shooting clay birds placed near the top of one of the rifle range backstops. A guy in his back yard with his 2 little girls hears a noise and discovers his above ground pool pissing a stream. It took that club over a year and a full NRA safety audit to get the rifle range opened up again.

Yet another club --- was on the outskirts of a city back in the 1930's but suburbs built up around it. And people complained about the noise, to no avail. One neighbor got a bright idea and called the sheriff's department after finding "a bullet that obviously came from that gun club" in their swimming pool. The deputy investigated and explained to them that a complete pistol cartridge is not what comes out the end of a gun. Then he warned the club board about the incident.

Last one --- a club has an abandoned railroad bed on one side property line that was purchased by a neighbor to use as an access road. The neighbor put up a gate and no trespassing signs. The club had one of its pistol ranges on that end of the property with a berm separating it from the railroad bed. One day the local sheriff's department was using that range for training when someone yelled "CEASE FIRE". Looking around they found an older gent with 2 grandchildren had gone around the gate so they could hike down the railroad bed and wanted the shooting to stop until they were well on their way. The deputies were not amused.

Having been both a board member and officer of gun clubs before, it is unfortunate that when you do so you are putting yourself in the line of fire for incidents like these. Better make sure the officers and board members are indemnified against any personal liability cuz there is lots of stupid and hate out there.

Maybe they watched a lot of Discovery Channel?

I don't know what, if any indemnification they (The directors) have but it's one point I've tried to make after reporting bullets leaving the 3 gun ranges when they shoot. Those bullets HAVE to obey the law of gravity and come down somewhere.
What happens when they eventually hit someone?? The club will be blamed and those in charge will be the first line to be attacked, particularly since they had prior knowledge of the problem and failed to act upon it. "N" word inserted here.....

I am not in your county, nor am I a Dimbocrat, so I'm afraid I can't vote for you. :(

However, I wish you success in the election!

Roy just vetoed voter ID, so we can rig something up for you. I need all the help I can get...

Would anyone want to grab some supper at Hendrix on hwy70 before the meeting? It's just a mile down the road from the club.

If you've never voted, don't forget your ID badge. And something to write with is useful. There's normally only a few pens floating around.

@Butter , Good luck to you. Will there be a video of your acceptance speech?

I wish RCWA were closer, I might join.
PHA is a bit too far as well.
So is that excellent range in Rockingham Co., but at least I have friends that can take me there.
We need a Guilford County Wildlife Association, maybe located near David Feed, south of Pleasant Garden.

You need to make this GCWA thing happen! I would be the first member..
