A friend of the family just dropped off a handful of aweful looking krusty rusted old guns. They asked me to look them over and fix what's worth fixing. They want anything that is useable to be cleaned up and lubed so they can shoot them and pretty much toss anything I say I junk.

Upon first glance im thinking it's almost all junk. Mostly guns with no hope (although some cool wall hangers)

Then I come across a 4" 38 special Colt diamondback! Wtf! It is definitely salvageable but sad to see it so neglected. kinda threw me for a loop.

I was planning to bead blast and rattle can anything that I thought was worth fixing up for them. I quote "we don't care what they look like, just get them going if you can" lol.

I don't know know if I can bring myself to spray paint the Colt.

No pics for now my phone is messed up. I'll try to barrow my brothers phone and get a pic.

Sadly I think the pitting is going to keep you from rebluing it. From what I can tell from the pics, it's going to take a lot of work to get the pits out. You'll probably loose the barrel markings in the process.

If it was something you owned I would encourage you to put the work in and restore it. Since it somebody else's and they want cheap work, cerakote and send it on it's way.

For now I'm just going to heavily soak it in oil and see how much of the rust will just wipe off. It still indexes perfectly and as far as I can tell its in good working condition. Although the amount of rust in the barrel makes my stomach hurt a little bit...

Unfortunately I don't think they want to spend much on it. I'm going to try to talk them into a professional restoration before I do much of anything with it.

If I knew what they had given me when they dropped it off I would have pressured them a bit.

Find out what they want for it and move forward based on that position. They might be better off just selling it to someone that will restore it.

Check the serial number and see if you can date it.

How did the guns get into that shape?

These things happen because most people are not gun people like most of us here. They have no idea how to take care of firearms, much less where they left the damn thing.

The lady who dropped them off said "this one is his baby"

I don't think he's going to get off of it. Apparently it was hard for her to talk him into even letting me take it for a few days to clean and lube it up.

Strange to see such a prized possession so neglected.

My uncle had his house broken into and all his guns were stolen. Several years later he was tearing down the old corn crib and found them all stashed under there. Detective said the thieves had probably hid them and never made it back for whaever reason. They were all pretty much trash. Had a couple of nice Belgiums and a 700 in there that made me sick to look at.

I am definitely going to tell them that I want it. Hopefully I can be first in line.

Can anyone recommend an affordable, reputable place to have it restored? I'd like to get them a quote to better it's chances of survival.

Preferably in the triangle area or near by. I am in Pittsboro.

Send the Diamondback to Fords. Will be the best money you/they ever spent. Will never know it was redone when you get it back. That’s too nice of a gun to Cerakote or paint.

Unfortunately it looks like they don't want to do anything to it.

I soaked it overnight and wiped off most of the rust with a rag. It's going home to start rusting again

A model 60 .22 was cleaned up and returned with the Colt. The rest was given to me. S&W .32 top break in super poor condition. Think a friend wants it. The others aren't worth cleaning up and will become decorations in my house. Mostly old break barrel shotguns.

What is one of those worth? I have no clue. $300? $1500? More?

Wouldn't be an old double in the lot would there? I love old doubles.

Yes, one. Not sure what it is. Only marking I can find is "genuine laminated steel" on the rib between the barrels. I considered fixing it up to try to shoot but from.my research it sounds like modern powder isn't safe in it.

Broken stock, one broken hammer, lots of rust. I assumed it's relatively worthless and planned on hanging it over the pool table. Probably wouldn't take a whole lot to convince me to sell it though.

Yes, I would not recomend shooting it with modern ammo. Chamber might not even be 2 3/4. Mind sharing photos of it?

I am no where near a gunsmith but I like to tinker on them.

If your buddy doesn't want the 32, let me know please.

I will try to remember to snap a few pics tomorrow. At the lady friends house tonight. It is currently in pieces oiled down. I'll probably just put it back together first.
