Some may know I was at the OBX last week for 4 days. As a "just in case" move I took my underfolder Mac 90. Loaded up some mags, wiped everything down and put it in a nylon padded case in the trunk. The car was a 14 Nissan sentra. Got back home and unloaded and was surprised at the RUST on the gun. Not just a frosting of surface grit. It had etched the bluing on the receiver cover and has weeping red stains! Man was I surprised. For you guys on the coast- is this normal?Did I not grease it up enough? Was the nylon assault case not a good idea? What do y'all use for the truck and trunk guns?

Did someone toss a sack of wet towels and swimsuits in there? That'll turn your trunk into a humidor.

Those padded cases retain a lot of moisture. A silicone gun sock might be a better option. Finding one to fit an AK might be a problem though.

It was a combo of the truck and the case most likely. Most trunks aren't airtight. Foam holds the moisture against the firearm. Hope it's not too bad. Oil gun, put big plastic bag with a desiccant pack, put bag inside the case if I'm traveling like that...

Sorry to hear about that. Any pics, and were you able to remove the rust? I've not had any problems at all with any guns on any trips to the beach, and I use cheap cases for them all. As Catfish said, I wonder if it was due to wet/damp clothes in the trunk or back seat of your car.

I had an AK in a silicone sock on a beach trip a couple of years ago. The receiver rusted enough to stick the sock to the gun. I figured it was just the atmosphere, since nothing was in the same compartment with the gun.

From a quick perusal of the interwebs, it seems trunk leaks are especially common on Sentras. Seems water gets in around the taillight gaskets and some plugs under the spare that can act as drains as well...
