So last night i was having a few beers after i had a few beers and i got to thinking, why can i buy a new j frame that is pre lock, but not a new k frame? Anybody know why that is? Am i wrong?

There are still some new in box prelock K frames out there if you want one. Might be expensive, but they are available. To answer your question, I don't know. Does S&W still produce J frames with no locks? I know they did at one time after the lock became standard, but I had been told everything they sell today had the lock.

Yea my 442 has no lock. Purchased new by me at lgs last year. I know there is new old stock out there for collectors pricing, but i was wondering why Smith wouldn't offer no lock versions of k frames since it's so obvious that gun lovers appear to prefer them 20-1

According to some folks, the answer is: California. There are so many people in CA with so much money that S&W doesn't think it's worth while to make a special run of guns for the rest of the country. Basically they care more about making guns that are approved for sale in California and will sell ok other places than making ones that can't be sold in California but would do a little better everywhere else.

Really, how many of us have $3000 just sitting waiting for Smith to offer a couple of bigger revolvers without locks? I think the internet echo chamber has skewed our perspective of how many people avoid guns with integral locks.

Only revolvers S&W currently makes without locks are the Centennial J frames (40/42/442/342/640/642 etc). No DA/SA or Bodyguard (humpback) J frames or other larger frames. I don't like the hole either.
