SC Highway Patrol - no tickets

Update, HP in South Carolina is not giving out tickets and is only responding to wrecks.

That is all!
Interesting. Might prove as a decent experiment for whether monetary fines have any sort of impact on safe driving behavior. I would put my money on it not having a strong correlation.

I was thinking about starting a thread on driving during the pandemic. I’ve decided that if I’m the only guy at an intersection that the light is green enough. Also that the speed limit on 485 is 90, and that I shouldn’t go much more than 10 over.

NC HP is still ticketing. I've seen them chickenhawking working men every day on my morning commute since last week.
Well they were nowhere to be found this evening. I drove down 485 & 77 from Highland Creek area to 77 exit 6 and had a guy in a new Avalon pass me multiple times doing 100+ and not gracefully at all. One time was easily 120 in the toll lanes, after which I said “annnnd I’m gonna watch him wreck”.
I didn’t see him crash but he clearly hit the wall around 12(?), was missing 1/3 of his bumper, pulled all the way over to the right shoulder, sat there for a second, I passed by, he goes flying by me again a minute later, in and out of traffic. He pulled over again at exit 7 to walk around the car. I’m betting that thing was stolen and/or he was on something.

Other than that nut job, I felt like I was driving in ATL where the min speed was 80 vs the normal 67-70’ish on 77.

For the record, I don’t drive an avalon.

They were kind of busy on I 85 at the 83. Roll off dumpster truck let his boom go up while under way. Hit the bridge. Destroyed the first support. 65-0 in about 2 feet though. Pinned under the bridge. Apparently they condemned the bridge and were beginning to take it down tonight. 85 southbound is closed and re routed down the service road.

That sounds pretty rough. Wonder if that'll happen to the can opener in Durham one day?

Just gonna leave this here...

I might have got stuck/hung up a few times, but not one time did I drive off with the boom up.
I screwed up once. Sucked.
What sucked the worse of it was that it was a can full of metal and was told didnt need to tarp it. I drove half across the parking lot and thought, "eh, itll just take a second, better safe than sorry!"
Got out of the routine. Dangit.

Well...if it's any consolation, just about every time I got stuck, I had a forethought of, "Ya know; that ground looks a bit soft...I might get hung up."

Then, stubborness kicked in and said, "F*ck it..I'm getting that can."

"According to Kudelka, a replacement bridge for SC 110 is currently being constructed under the I-85 Widening Project."

I'm guessing that part of the project might be sped up a little bit.

Not as simple as it sounds, if they aren't already at that point, though. And I don't think they are, based on recollections of my last trip through there.

The sister bridge has the landings and center pillar up I believe. Might be further along on the span I just don’t pay much attention. When I came through last night they had part of the bridge down. My GPS shows 85 open. I’ll find out tomorrow. They are doing construction from the state line to exit 78 so it’s just one more thing.

If NC does this, my commute is going to get a lot shorter.

I think it is...i drive 35 mins one way everyday to my "essential" job and average speed seems to be 80-95mph... passed 4 state troopers posted on side of road and they didn't blink an eyelash. I told my coworkers, this is the best part of this virus so far, my normal 35 min commute is consistently taking less the last week or so.

I watched a NCSHP come off the overpass where he was running radar and pull a guy on 485 near Mint Hill yesterday around lunchtime.

From Burlington to Durham every day last week and a half, not a single person pulled over... just my experience. Usually i see at least one every day going each way. Ymmv

I haven’t seen anything official being released on it, but I suspect that VA state troopers aren’t giving tickets either. Drove to VA Beach this weekend and I didn’t see a single car pulled over on the way there or back. People were driving like it was the Autobahn too.

I wish everyone drove like it was the Autobahn.

I seriously doubt there's any kind of actual "no speeding ticket" directives out there. Rather, a more focused role in areas more suitable for actual public safety in these times.

With fewer people on the roads, higher speeds is a relatively lower concern than it was before.

And, of course, it depends on what areas you're in.

In addition the "courts" that would be used to extort the revenue are closed. They're busy enough on a normal day. Imagine them trying to clear the backlog of 1,2,3 or more months of crap tickets?
