I have finally found a decent project truck I may be interested in. The only thing keeping me from jumping on it is the seller states it will only come with a bill of sale. How hard would it be to acquire a title. From my limited knowledge I’m guessing the SC owner would have to file for lost title, then I would have to get it titled in NC. I haven’t spoke with the seller yet, trying to get info on title to see if it is worth the effort.

I have no knowledge of SC law… but there are some details those who do know will likely need.

Year of truck?
Registered in SC or another state?
Registered to current owner or someone else?

Is seller willing to go to DMV with you? If he’s willing and the car is legally in his name, you can likely get am immediate title then submit for it to be re-titled in your name.

I did that here in NC. They issued an “instant title” to the seller. They then immediately initiated the process for it to be re-titled into my name. He only had the title long enough to sign it and then turned it over to the lady who sent it off to Raleigh. I had a fresh title in hand in ~3 weeks.

I’d go this route, you don’t know if it is titled in the sellers name or someone 2-3 owners ago. If the seller won’t go to get a new title I’d run away. Too much headache. Like RacerX said, if it is titled in the sellers name a quick trip to DMV will get him a title immediately.

Yeah, if the title is "lost" the state will replace it in a skinny minute and the dude knows this. The title isn't lost, the vehicle is titled in someone else's name.

There is a way I’ll ask a buddy of mine about it today. We went up to Richmond a couple years ago and picked up some kind of little bmw that the seller didn’t have a title for. The seller was a business, they restored old cars and such not a car dealer. We pushed the car up on my trailer chained it down and hit 95 south. My buddy fixed that Beamer up and sold it with a title.

Thanks for the quick replies and info. Unfortunately someone beat me to it and the truck has already sold. It was a 1976 ford hi boy F250.

for future reference you can use the Vermont title loophole as long as the vehicle is at least 15 years old
"If you purchase a vehicle that does not have a title, it can be a little tricky to get one. Fortunately, there is a legal loop-hole to eventually obtain one: Vermont will issue you a registration and license plate regardless of if you live in VT or bought the vehicle in VT. So, this is sufficient to drive around legally in any state"

Somebody else means, a bank, a SC title loan company etc, there hiding the vehicle from repo. Flood Total, Estate in Probate the list is endless as getting a clear title.
