School me on red dots

Thanks guys. I was looking at the vortex splitfire. Man this is a lot of info to take in.

Yeah...but really try not to over think it. It’s a red dot. You put it where you want the bullet to go. It isn’t quite the science of a scope with all the lines and magnification and fancy stuff. Any that have been recommended in this thread would be fine and work for you well.

Im the guy who puts a Weaver 4X fixed scope on everything. It's $200 or so, it works well and there is nothing to screw up.

I like the Trijicon T-2 and the MRO. I sold my EO Tech because the circle plus dot washed out the target in low light.
Mro. I sold my aimpoints. Mro is much better
Why?
When the MRO came out I looked through it next to the T-2, the MRO had a darker blue tint (like the T-1), thus harder to see critters in low light.

There is an Aimpoint PRO in the BST for 330, seems an ok price.

The FOV is bigger than the aimpoints and the newer mro’s don’t have as blue of a tint to them.

Did not see this in earlier replies, when you use the red dots, you keep both eyes open. (unless you don't want to).

The Sig Romeo 5 is my favorite RDS for less than $200. I had one for about a year now. It's been on several different rifles but found a home on my PS90. It's always held zero. is very clear with a small and well defined dot. It is one of the few RDS that I can see clearly with my astigmatism(no flaring or double dot). Turns on automatically when the sight senses movement.
I have a Romeo 4b (circle/dot) and a Romeo 5, the 4b is one the HD weapon, every night turn on the 4b every morning turn it off for at least 2 years. I just checked and they both have MOTAC (shake awake)

motac works great. I still have the original 2032 battery from last year in mine and it came with a spare.

When looking at the mentioned optics in this thread remember that red dot sights are very forgiving on eye relief and such while prism sights like the Vortec Spitfire do have tighter eye relief limits.

Ive got a vortex spitfire 3x ebr556 prism that ive had a few years on a 16" carbine. Never any issues with it, pretty solid, accurate enough for me. Reticle is handy as well. Gone through one battery in the time ive had it..left it on for a week in the safe the first minth or so. Heh.

Also have a vortex sparc2 on a 9mm AR pistol. Decent no frills or complaints.

Got a Vortex crossfire red dot arriving tomorrow for another AR pistol..will have to compare it to the sparc2.

Clearly i am a vortex fan..never had issues with their products, great warranty, yada yada.

Primary Arms Micro Dot.....if it breaks after 10 years and 15K rounds buy another one. They work very well and for 99% of AR shooters its all you ever need. I own Aimpoints, Eotech's, Holosun's and Vortex and 5 PA red dots and have never had one fail me. Of course my Vortex and Holosun's have worked well for me also. If money is not a real issue or you plan to go to war soon get an Aimpoint if you have a budget and plan to plink.....Primary Arms, Vortex or Holosun.

For a defensive/serious gun.

Having owned both Aimpoint Micros and the PRO... I'd spend the $$ on the Micro H1 over the PRO.

Functionally, it's lighter and less "busy" with less body around the lens. It works better for me overall.

The MRO is okay when I used it but I've never owned it. Wouldn't discourage against it but the Aimpoint H1 or H2 are so proven there is no reason to save a bit of $$ for the MRO, though Trijicon makes quality stuff.

Remember that you need to mount it as well. I would email American Defense Manufacturing and ask them when their next 20% off sale is and pick up an H1 on a high/SOCOM/lower 1/3 mount.

You WILL need a mount for it. Larue and ADM both work GREAT. I'd skip Scalarworks personally.

It's for fun and hunting.

I use and perfer ADM mounts myself, but I’m curious on why you would skip on Scalarworks mounts?

Vortex SPARC on everything I own. From 4.5" 22LR, to PS90, to 7" 9mm AR, to various 5.56/6.8/300BLK ARs, and even my 50 Beowulf.

They moved to a SPARC 2, and then a SPARC AR. I've been satisfied with the quality, performance, and customer service from Vortex. Their warranty is hard to beat.

I'm leaning that way.

The PSA deal on the Sparc AR has me looking hard at it too. That or the Sig Romeo 5. They also have a no questions asked warranty on them much like Vortex.

I just got and email from Fuquay Gun and they are having a sale and have Vortex on sale ...
SPARC AR $199.99...
PSA has the same price on the SPARC AR...but it includes 10 PMags, no tax (for NC), and free shipping.

I'm assuming that's the deal @Damn_Yankee eas referencing.

Got tbe vortex crossfire yesterday, dont have it mounted yet, but after tinkering with it I like it already. The only thing I wish it had was tethered caps for the windage and elevation covers.
Ordered it from opticsplanet. Sale plus 10% off (4th of july sale) and free shipping.125otd. Took 3 weeks to get here due to back orders, but worth it Id say.

I just talked myself into getting a Romeo 5 from PSA to go on my not yet built 556 pistol upper
I ended up buying one from Amazon yesterday. Same price as PSA sale but I got a $60 instant gift card for applying for an Amazon CC I don't plan on ever using. My total with free shipping was $68.85.

Have you noticed a lot of lens flare while looking through the Romeo 5 with light to your back?

Not really. I've shot it in bright daylight and low light and haven't really seen anything like that. Where do you have it mounted on the receiver?
