SCOTUS Rules...Staes Can Require Online Retailers To Collect Sales Tax

As much as I would love to change the stupid law, you know as well as I do that there is no real possibility of doing that from within the system. I’m sure the nations founders would have loved to changed the law too, but realized just how futile that proposition is.

Things don't change because we (myself included) usually don't put enough effort into achieving change.

There are software packages that calculate any sales and use taxes, most companies can afford to use it,
some states also calculate sales tax on the shipping and handling fees.

OK, we have been waiting on this one to go down. And my wife read up on it a bit tonight. The ruling has some spots that are pretty narrow. Other states can't just do what they wish right now. I think this ruling was specific to SD and some of the laws they have in place. But it will pave the way for others OR for a move by the feds to streamline the process. As far as the current ruling, it does not kick in until you do $100K worth of sales or 200 transactions in SD.

As this goes forward I'm hoping they keep those type of thresholds. Because I have a pretty decent presence on eBay currently, but I can't afford to deal with this AND keep my prices down. And if the marketplaces do it for me, their fees will go up. Small businesses might be able to absorb costs OK. But micro businesses and cottage business likely can't. The feds already want 1/3 of what you make and you have to claw, scratch, and dig to not have them take it off your gross. It's pretty nuts and sometimes I wonder if it's worth bothering with. And things like can certainly push it over the "not worth my time" threshold.

I can live with those types of thresholds, too. If they eliminate thresholds, or make them really low, it will be very hard for a lot of small businesses who are internet based.

My guess is those thresholds will be a state by state issue. For example, if you are in IL and have a looming pension crisis squeezing every last penny out of your peasants is crucial. If just to keep the system from crashing another year. If you are in Wyoming they can probably make it reasonable. But there is an argument to be made that everybody should play by the same rules. So anything could happen this being politics. But the one thing we don't need is more Federal involvement. That never ends well. Unless you are Berkshire Hathaway, Tesla and the other large rent seekers.

Yeah, it's a crap shoot on what will happen. As much as I dislike Fed involvement, in something like this it might make it simpler. But it might really screw it up too. I do know with eBay I can just refuse to sell to certain states. So that might be an option too. If they really go nuts, I can just not deal with them.

Chief Jason's Holster Emporium. It's gonna be huuuge. People will drive from far and wide to come see your leather wares. You don't need no stinkin' internet.

Taxes taint the flavor... wait, different thread.

But in the same context, kiss my arse they can. Those of you that are screaming it’s law and your duty, do YOU file them with your taxes? If you voluntarily give them more money then there’s a word for that. We’ve said it before, no need for me to use it again. Starts with a B and ends in licker
