I know nothing about these so don't know what questions to ask. Looking to put one camera. for now outside back of the house but may move it around some. Needs to be battery operated wireless and viewable by iPhone. Want something to play around with and view day or night.

Arlo. I have an Arlo setup and love it. It has motion detection, HD video and IR for nighttime.

A coworker has Arlo. The one he has mounted to a tree caught this a few nights ago.

Several cars were hit that night. He even has video of them walking back through his yard at 7:30 the next morning.

Another vote for Arlo. Battery and wired choice. Hardwiring gives you a few seconds of before video of the triggering event to get some more context.

I think we have blink with two cameras. One on the porch looking at the drive and carport and the other looking towards our barn. Ours mostly record the dogs and turkey running around but it has let us know when and where packages were delivered. We disarm it when we’re home and cut it back on with the app when we leave.

I use ring. I’ve got the alarm system, door bell, and a couple cams outside. Caught a guy stealing an air compressor and a ladder I’ll try to find it and post the video https://ring.com/share/6824200298874309964

Another vote for Arlo. I bought it because our cars kept getting "checked". A few weeks after install I got video and was able to send a clip to the police. They caught him from it. If you are a costco member they have a package with 3 cameras and mounts.

I use Blink. Works well.
I set mine to not indicate recording.
I have heard they get stolen on occasion.
Defeated by a hoodie and covid mask.

I use Arlo as well. Easily moved around and take off for recharging. Easy setup and links to phone. Same batteries for almost 3 yrs so far. Also use Ring doorbell wireless.

My pessimism tells me he only “caught” the guy on video. Nothing more.
I got my compressor back that evening and the ladder back the next day after pawn shop opened.
There’s really a story behind it I’ll try to explain.

I got his license plate when he pulled forward and drove through my yard to escape. I called non emergency police line and they sent out a street cop to take report and I emailed him the videos. I get a call from street cop an hour or so later trying to confirm license plate (I had two letters or digits mixed up in order) so I figured they knew who the guy was. My girlfriend was working late and on the way home DROVE PAST THE THIEVES HOUSE WHILE HE WAS UNLOADING MY (broken) COMPRESSOR OUT OF HIS CAR. He lived about 3/4 mile from my house the way the crow flies. She calls me and lets me know I exactly where she’s talking about. I grab a pistol (good or bad move idk) told her to leave and I head that way. It took my probably 4 or 5 minutes to get to his house. By the time I got there a detective was taking to the guy and his dad with my compressor sitting there on the ground. I stopped in the road and roll my window down and yell “hey that’s my shit”. Detective comes over to the truck asks me to calm down (guessing he saw the gun on my center console) and that he would bring me my compressor back to my house shortly and asked me to go home. Detective brings me my compressor and I meet him at the pawn shop the next day to get my ladder back. The system worked that time.

The next day I go to the store to get snack before a 14 hour fishing trip the next day and the POS is outside at the store selling watches. We made eye contact on my way into the store and he turns his head I knew he recognized me the way he was acting. I text my GF that I just ran into him at the store and that I’m going to tell him if he comes back to our house he’s a dead man. She advised against doing so but I couldn’t help myself. I walked up to him and told him to his face he was a dead man if comes back to my house.

I have hard wired POE cameras covering most of the exterior of the house but also wanted some wireless I could move around for checking on the garden or seeing what was eating all my birdseed. Bought a couple of these Reolink Argus 2 cameras with solar panels and they are great. I think they have a better picture at night than the Argos cameras.

What happened to the guy who stole the stuff??

Not exactly sure. I got a call from someone at the court house maybe two months after it happened to update me on the case. He was about to go to trial and there was video of him stealing stuff at 7 or 8 different houses. She told me I had the right to know when he was released from jail blah blah blah I told her I didn’t care to know. Not sure exactly what happened don’t really care. I drive past his house (parents house) occasionally and the car he was driving hasn’t had a tag on it since probably June or July fir whatever that’s worth. I’ll find one his previous mugshots and post it.

Edit I found it. This wasn’t his mugshot from my robbery but one right after 7727951D-8B9A-4BF2-9CE6-93788F316E89.jpeg

Had a visitor last night. The gf is home by herself this week since I’m out of town working and is a little freaked out this morning. I think he saw the cameras and tucked tail.

So he was released on 10K bond for that bust. No bond set on 3,4,5, or 6, probably means those are getting plea bargained away. Plead away the felonies, guilty on the misdemeanors, time served, wrist slapped, don't do it again. Free to prey on society again.

Unfortunately you’re probably right.

I’ve been using Amazon Ring products for 2 years now. Battery power with small solar panels for recharging.

They are easy to hook up via WiFi and I can monitor and change settings with the app. They record to “the Cloud” and are viewable anywhere via the internet.

You can manually activate at any time as well. We use this to check on/monitor the dogs while they are outside.

This is a Ring picture of my and my neighbor’s backyards. The dock is his...😩

Serious question. For those us us that adamantly don't want everything that happens in our yard "uploaded to The Cloud", what are the best reasonably prices solutions for a CCTV monitoring system that records only for my purposes, retained for release only if I feel like sharing it?

If I'm not mistaken, the Arlo (only one that I have direct experience with) allows a record-to-USB drive option. You don't *have* to stream it or otherwise allow web access. The Arlo base station makes its own "wifi" network for the cameras to talk back to the unit.

The newer gen3 Blink camera/sync module works this way now too. Only wish I had seen that before buying the set I got.

I just installed a system at my house with the same goals as you mentioned. I have a friend who installs systems for a living and he sold me on Hikvision. Now as far a "reasonably priced" you definitely get what you pay for as far as camera quality. I went with a mid tier camera for 130 a piece. The cameras have the ability to record to a micro SD card. I have a 4 terabyte NVR that records on a continuous loop, which is about 2 weeks of storage with 8 cameras. The Hikvision NVR system is pretty user friendly. I use it hooked uo to my bedroom TV and use that as a monitor. I do have the ability to access footage on my cellphone, but nothing is stored on "the cloud".
