Seeking Advice/Guidance (First AR)

Good suggestions already. Plenty of rifles to be had. Few thoughts:
Personally, I would look for 16” midlength (not carbine) with a lighter barrel profile ideally. A2 birdcage is a flash hider and compensator, not a brake. It’s important to understand the difference, imo.

I’ll throw out this:
If you are anywhere near raleigh to Greensboro: when you get a rifle, I will take you to a private range and give you basic instruction and tips that you will find useful for shooting it from 5’ to 300 yards, as well as setup rifle with dependable zero. Not an expert but have competed a bit with them and have built many. Can help with some handgun shooting as well.
I would encourage you to have the goal of learning and trying some matches. I think it is the best way to improve and test you equipment and skills.

@BlackOceans13 you would be wise to take him up on his offer. Dude knows his stuff and is a hell of a shooter. He's one of the first people I ask when it comes to AR related things.

After trying one or two of his rifles you may find that your best option is to build your own. You'll get exactly what you want that way. Many times people will buy a rifle with, say, a front sight post and then decide they don't want that. Or switch to a mid length gas system, whatever. You end up with a box of extra parts that you had to pay for. Nothing wrong with extra parts though.

If you were going with an off the shelf rifle I'd personally go with a Barnes Precision if you can swing it. That's a wonderful rifle. It is good enough that I'd consider it a fighting rifle if it came down to it.

Aero Precision rifles are coming back in stock. At least some of the complete lowers popped up the other day, as did an upper or two.

Depends on your point of view.
idle parts are like idle teens, they tend to make babies when you're not paying attention.

Which is hilariously true because a quick look at my parts bin revealed there's a whole rifle worth of parts hiding in there. 😆

Hi Rob,

At this time I would hang your hat on a Springfield Armory Saint.

I have been around the AR business for a while and I can tell you that is a great carbine. Yes there are others that are great as well, a degree or two better, or worse. but for a value build from a factory, The one linked is what I would buy.

Like John said, these are good rifles.

Most of the guns in this post are the same price and no sighting system. Kind of crazy to me to say "here buy this AR with no sights" it's as good as one with sights. Lol
That's just because so many people these days use optics anyway, getting some backup iron sights on there is easy and does not cost much. Personally I picked a AR 556 with backup sights already on there.

I was really considering it last night, but the person is two hours away. I think someone has grabbed it up now though.

Distance is an obstacle to so many of the things I see for sale. It's probably saved me from the doghouse.

Hey guys, just wanted to check in. Still haven't picked anything up, life and getting things in order again down here still putting a damper on things.

I'd love one of Andrew's rifles and I love what come with the BPC but I know they can be hard to come by at times and gone quickly. If I can snatch one when I'm able to that's still gonna be my #1 I feel.

With that being said tho however, I've begun a frequenting a newer store here and there when I go to Shadyside Dragway (which has kind of become my new hometrack), about 10 mins from.the race track in King's Mountain is Guns & Roses, and I've got to say they are great. Great people, last time I was in there a they had a large selection of used rifle at reasonable prices I feel, and they got alot of great other things as well. If a BPM isn't available I think my #2 option is to grab something from them based off your guys suggestions, they had basic Colts up to Black Rains last time I was in there and incredibly nice to deal with (or maybe I'm still just used to the way things go in NY hahaha)

Just wanted to give a little update on the original search, thanks again everyone!

I'm a member at the same range as NKD and will happily join in and bring additional toys for you to test drive. No expert here either but can help get you going in the right direction.

If you’re anywhere within an hour or two drive of @Apex Defense Group, I’d recommend talking to them about a 1:1 session at some point…in additional to accepting the offers you’ve been given already. With a 1:1 (as opposed to joining a class) you get to set the agenda and work at your speed.

No sir, nothing as of yet, to be honest my original time frame went to hell, not sure when ill be ready to purchase unfortunately
Yeah, been there, done that. I would also offer you to try out my AR 556 Ruger if you were to consider that one.
