So the truck gun thread got me thinking about choices for an AR chambered in 556 for a SHTF truck gun. I currently am loading mags with 62gr green tip for this situation. I have been looking at the Winchester PDX ammo and the 64 gr gold dots. Whats everyone else run in their AR for self defense?

Personally I have seen what even Tulammo can do at close to moderate ranges, so I wouldn't feel disarmed if someone tossed me a mag of it during a fight.

That said, one reason I lean towards Federal HST and Speer Gold Dots in my carry pistol is because many police agencies have adopted them in their service. That way if by some random act of the fate a lawyer asks me what type of ammo I used in a defensive shoot I can always respond with "the same type we issue to the police." So, it may be worth looking into what LEOs carry. I think some also carry federal and Gold Dots in their rifles as well.

I wonder what the security guards at Bear Creek Arsenal carry in their weapons? LMAO

Barnes 70gr or 55gr Vor-tx (TSX Bullets)
Speer Gold Dot 64gr
Black Hills 77gr Tipped Match King
Federal Fusion 62gr

Hornady 75gr TAP but I do not use the AR15 platform as a truck gun or even a home defense weapon. If I was running an AR15 as a truck gun my number one concern with green tip ammo is over-penetration of targets and the poor terminal performance of 62gr M855. There are better bullets for the job but the scenario you are preparing should dedicate the ammo choice. IMHO

Hornaday Black 75gr. But I recently given a decent amount of MK 262 Mod 1 ammo, so I'll be using that.

After seeing what 77gr Tipped Match Kings did to a deer....I'm sold

I have the Winchester PDX1 60-gr in my home defense mags { oh, yeah, I mean until I lost all of that in a flood}.

The heaviest expanding bullet that will reliably feed in your rifle. Reloads M855 or a bonded round.

64 gr Gold Dots. I bought a bunch for hunting during a PSA sale. Honesty what ever is loaded is mags will work provided it cycles reliably.

M855 isn't really an expanding bullet; it fragments and yaws
Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear; heaviest expanding bullet that will reliably feed for my primary mag, and M855 or bonded for my reloads. Thought being that if I need a second mag I may need more penetration than expansion.
