Sen. Chris Murphy Hints Republicans Ready to Cave on Gun Control

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) took to Twitter on Wednesday to hint that his Republican colleagues are ready to cave on gun control.

Yeah?

Well...there's a buncha citizens, free citizens, that ain't ready to cave yet, so suck it.

The nine signatories were Sens. Dean Heller (R-NV), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), James Lankford (R-OK), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Tim Scott (R-SC), John Thune (R-SD), James Inhofe (R-OK), and John Cornyn (R-TX).

I hope they at least get primaried out come next spring and summer

Honestly I don’t care about the bumpfire stocks ... but I care that is the another step down a path which gun owners have been pushed since the Gun Control Act of 1968 (or even back to the National Firearms Act of 1934) because of compromise, common sense, thinking of the children or other BS reason. Enforce the damn laws on the books and don’t plea bargain away a gun charge ... or even worse like Commiefornia and Gov Moonbeam remove it altogether ... their common sense BS does little to nothing to stop criminals since only law abiding citizens honor them. The little step of the bumpfire ban would make way to the next piece to the next ... hell the liberals could reach for scopes because it allows targeting victims from far away. If the DC Wusses don’t grew a pair and stand up our kids won’t even have BB guns.

Mr. Scott just lost my vote.

"close to a bipartisan breakthrough" means Murphy thinks one Republican might be persuaded to go along with his crap.

This is why voting for principle is vitally important in any nation which intends to remain Free.

The principled representative will weather the temporary storms and flaring passions of the Public.

The Party Man, however, has given up his principles to the will of the Party - which has always been and continues to be power.

These United States will one day have to reap the bitter harvest of the crops we've sown - and timidity and cowardice at the ballot box will require a steep price to remedy.

And Tim Scott just helped me big time with a huge $$ fight against the VA...because of his input, they caved. And now I see this

We need criminal control. The vast majority of shootings are by people who should have been executed or still be in jail for the many previous crimes they have already committed!

South Carolina here. Tim Scott has been assimilated.

I will reserve comment on Sen Tim Scott and this possible caving until more info comes out and from different sources.

In the senate letter to Mr. Luck, it stated having a review two national firearms laws on relation to bump fire stocks and enforcement of the laws already on the books.

All too often when searching for verification of facts, people get too emotionally attached to the outcome they want to believe, rather than maintaining the clinical objectiveness that must be adhered to in order to find the facts, be they good, bad or ugly and whether or not it's something we actually want to hear, believe or agree with.

So, keeping this in mind, I'll wait for at least three disassociated, valid sources then form my own opinion.

I'm in the process of moving down to S.C. (for the second time). I'm anxious to see how Tim Scott's talk pans out. Also what Trey Gowdy meant when he said last week "...people who should not have guns (related to Corning, CA)."

Tim has shown me in a few email responses that he is not strong. He will cave IMO to pressure from the left about gun control. Modern times? Nah. The time has nothing to do with it. Truly a sad time we live in....

The shooters was a prohibited person. Restraining order. He got the guns illegally.

Looks like it is a bill to require states and agencies to report crimes to the NCIS. Lose money if you don’t, get more if you do (based off of a quick reading of an article about what they presented

Yes, that's it. Forcing the states with incentives to do their job...how about withholding highway $ unless they report the criminals to NICS. I am sure the states will abuse the reporting.

A bipartisan group of senators Thursday unveiled legislation to improve background-checks for gun sales, a narrow measure that attempts to address the recent spate of mass shootings.

The bill represents an incremental update to existing law but has the best chance of any effort to pass through Congress in recent years, with the weight of support from senior Senate Republicans behind it and no public opposition from the gun lobby.

The bill, crafted by Sens. John Cornyn, R.-Texas, and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., would attempt to better enforce current law and strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check system to ensure all background check information is uploaded.

According to a description of the bill, first obtained by NBC News, the “Fix NICS Act” offers a handful of solutions to help get all the necessary records uploaded, including asking federal agencies and states to produce plans to upload and verify the criminal and mental health records necessary to bar unfit purchasers from buying a weapon.

Because the federal government can't force states to comply with uploading requirements, it creates incentives like grants for states to do so. It also adds accountability measures like withholding political appointees bonuses for agencies that fail to do so. The bill also directs federal funds to ensure that domestic violence crimes are added to the background-check system.

This is the third attempt to fix the background-check reporting system since 1995. The NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007 provided millions to encourage the states to improve their data sharing. That was preceded by The National Criminal History Improvement Program, the first effort to give the states an incentive to report more records.

“For years agencies and states haven’t complied with the law, failing to upload these critical records without consequence,” Cornyn said in a statement announcing the effort Thursday. “Just one record that’s not properly reported can lead to tragedy, as the country saw last week in Sutherland Springs, Texas. This bill aims to help fix what’s become a nationwide, systemic problem so we can better prevent criminals and domestic abusers from obtaining firearms.”

“This deal will strengthen the background check system and save lives. Our bill marks an important milestone that shows real compromise can be made on the issue of guns," Murphy added.

The National Rifle Association, a powerful gun lobby that gives heavily to elected officials, won't oppose it. “The National Rifle Association has long supported the inclusion of all appropriate records in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System," Jennifer Baker, NRA spokeswoman, told NBC News.

And the National Shooting Sports Foundation has also endorsed, clearing the way for the Senate to move ahead.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., have also signed onto the bill, as have Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Dean Heller, R-Nev., and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.

Cornyn, Murphy, Blumenthal and Heller are represent states with the most deadly mass shootings: the Sutherland Springs church shooting, Sandy Hook, and the concert massacre in Las Vegas.

Both Murphy, who has advocated for gun control legislation since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2013, and Blumenthal hinted at an agreement earlier Wednesday on Twitter. Meanwhile, Cornyn, the Senate majority whip, told reporters Sunday, "We need to fix this broken background check system."

The last time gun control legislation came close to passing was after Sandy Hook when Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., fell four vote shorts of passing their bill to strengthen background checks. Their bill was more expansive than the current one. It would have required background checks for gun purchases at gun shows and online.

The proposed legislation comes as funerals are taking place for 26 churchgoers gunned down in tiny Sutherland Springs, Texas. The shooter's domestic violence conviction should have blocked his purchase of a rifle used in the massacre, but was not submitted to the background check system by the military.

They respond to every failure of government by further empowering the same people who failed us. If they had a bill that made our government officials personally accountable (as in prison time) when they fail to uphold existing law, like not reporting the TX shooter to NICS, I could get behind that. Of course, if they did that, then we wouldn't have any sanctuary cities, would we?

“For years agencies and states haven’t complied with the law, failing to upload these critical records without consequence,” Cornyn said in a statement announcing the effort Thursday.

Wait wait wait, so the government isn't following it's own laws? So this is another case of adding more laws to get compliance of existing laws, by the same people that make the laws??

Yea, I guess that makes sense.

Trey is conservative. He was also a prosecutor. Wonder if he would place officer safety (ie: guns off the streets no matter what) over 2A rights? I don’t get that impression...he’s always seemed like a “by the book” kind of guy to me

After I wrote him back complaining that he obviously didn't read my letter if he thought I wrote in support of more gun control, this is what I received.

Jesus....

I went back and read the first letter he sent you, then, read this one.

Prime example of why I trust no politicians....none of em.
