Trying to decide on a 1-4 scope for my AR .223 for target shooting only (CMP, NRA high power, etc...) Rules say 4.5 is the max allowed - and although the Leupold "5" is actually 4.5 they say it isn't legal for comp...

Any experience you can share with me on this? I understand there's no substitute for good glass but right now my budget is ~ 300 and I prefer basic duplex (not looking for red dot and reticles like BDC don't interest me either)

I haven't seen very many scopes that are actually up to 4.5, most are up to 4 but I have very little experience with scopes and would like some help with this if possible.

Thanks

If you can tell the difference between 4 and 4.5 power, you got me beat. I'd search for a scope that had a finer crosshair, for some reason it makes the low power scopes seem more powerful.

This is BDC, but for the $$ it is a heck of a deal. I grabbed one a few weeks ago. Haven't mounted it yet, but glass is very good and red dot is daylight bright. Mount and throwlever included as well.

If you want to spend less money and haave a duplex a Leupold AR scope should work. Check out SWFA or Optics Planet.

I was gonna suggest the Steiner, but it seems out of his price range a little. And I have no experience with this type of shooting.
But I have seen them under $400.00, which is just crazy.
I got mine for 459.00 with throw lever. German lenses, clean reticle, daylight bright crisp dot. It's so choice!
I love mine and like it even more after every match I have used it in. It's a joy. I guess it's just better than I expected for the money, by quite a lot.
I use it for 2gun and carbine matches mostly, and as I said have no experience with this type of shooting so don't know if the reticle is ideal.

There are a few threads scattered around the CMP National Match AR forum regarding scopes for service rifle and high power. I think I remember hearing good things about the Leupold and also Vortex PST 1-4. Check the forum as I’m sure a couple others were also mentioned. forums.thecmp.org

Thanks for all of the responses so far -now I'm REALLY unsure  lol.

Seriously, since I don't have unlimited resources, one of my biggest issues is convincing myself that I "deserve" a higher-end optic (at my current novice level of shooting ability). Does that make sense?

ncvarmint's setup is within reach and reasonable but the Steiner scope suggested is also excellent given the "bang for the buck" for that quality.

Am I worth it? Wifey says "hell no, get the cheaper one and save money for ammo" o_O lmao

I like grabbing the best optic I can afford, but I really haven't heard anything bad about the Leupold AR's. If this is just for competition and fun nothing wrong with saving a few bucks and buying more ammo. Then in 6 months you'll look through someone else's scope, and say wow, that is nice. Then you buy another scope and have a spare for a new rifle.

...then you'll need another safe.....

I've been running a Vortex PST 1-4x since last year and have been very pleased with it. Unfortunately availability is limited since Vortex doesn't make then any more.

That SWFA Leupold deal is a good price, but another budget friendly option is Athlon optics 1-4x

Check out the National Match Competition forum... plenty of competitive shooters over there and lots of threads on optics for service rifle
