So I'm going to send off my 10/22 to get some work done and I don't really know how to package and mail it properly. I'm thinking wrapping it in the big bubbled bubble wrap and then just putting it in an appropriate sized box or tube.

Should I use UPS, USPS or FedEx? Are they going to give me a hard time about mailing a firearm?

As long as it's not a Charger you can send it directly to the gunsmith or manufacturer and they can send it directly back to you using any of the three carriers you mentioned. A handgun cannot be shipped by an individual through USPS.

The best thing I'd seen was double boxed, with several additional layers of cardboard on the barrel end. As the shipper tosses the box, the barrel will only flatten the first couple layers of cardboard, instead of punching through. Then pack it snug so there's no/little movement. Insure it, UPS managed to break one of my rifles in two. They broke the walnut at the pistol grip, then refused to pay for a replacement stock.

I would avoid FedEx. Sent a rifle to manufacturer for warranty work using USPS. Arrived fine. Manufacturer sent it back using FedEx, who left box leaning on my apartment's door. Last week I ordered something which was also shipped by them. Tracking number claimed it was left at leasing office. It wasn't. I created ticket with them. They kept saying they are going to contact driver. Next week I get email from leasing office saying someone left my box there with a note saying "This is not mine." Address was correct (mine).

They left a Smith and Wesson on my doorstep once. Even though the package was clearly marked adult signature only.

Damn and I thought FedEx was supposed to be better than the USPS! I mailed it UPS double boxed and wrapped well. Got there just fine. He will send it back USPS, insured for $600 so it will require a signature.
Hopefully they can handle that. Last time I was sent a package through USPS, the charlotte distribution center stole the contents, claiming the package was destroyed and contents "lost".
