SO my old set up of the 'tactical garden wagon' is no longer ideal since I can park directly in the shooting bay (though still has use for long range setup). also, without tables, I find myself working completely out of my vehicle at the range and decided I needed to optimize my setup.

To start, here is a tailgate table w/ pegboard backsplash.setup holds mags, boxes of bullets, Even a rifle + pistol without using any table space (or few handguns if no rifle). This should clear some much needed room on the trunk bed for taking out steel targets, snowing larger/heavier items, body armor etc.

Once it gets a bit warmer I will be rigging up a mount for AR15 on the top center roll bar too :)

Removed panel to access attachment points for cable (primary load bearing structure).

Collapsed position during normal Jeep use. right now its secured via magnets. Im probably going to need to beef up closing method, but will see how this works for now...

this will be a living thread, as I continue to optimize its use for the range....more to come.

Cool! I want to do something for the back of my Xterra. Need to make it multi functional. I’ll be watching you for brilliant ideas that I can steal!

I like what youve done, pretty awesome!

Consider folding the shelf up in back instead of up in front to stow it.

Right now the back of the shelf is secured by pipe hangers, cut them in half so the opening faces up. Take the spare halves and mount them facing up just inside and below where you’ve mounted the cables to the tailgate. It’ll fold up from the back and then hang from the top clips securely and the cables will be extended, so it’ll all be neater.

Cheap DIY version of an overland folding table. Looks pretty good.

depending on what someone already has, can be anywhere from free to like 45 bucks .

once I finalize the arrangement and design I will clean it up (paint or plasti-dip the shelves, cut the extra cable slack, etc etc).

not exactly sure what you mean in back instead of front?

Those shelves also work for molle panels if you hang vertically.

they also fit many type of handgun mags directly, another reason I went with wire rack.

I will eventually make a 1/4 wood insert if I find myself needing more solid surface, but plan on using the freed up space on Jeep bed for that as of now

In all honesty I was expecting to see a jeep being shot at on the range...

sorry to disappoint. I didn’t think shooting AT a Jeep as target would be amusing to anyone but the actual person doing it, and even that novelty probably wears off after 5 rounds.

that being said, come summer, you can be sure to see me shooting FROM the Jeep :)

Have you seen some of the ones that use an HDPE sheet, like a big cutting board? You can get a tailgate sized sheet for like $20 then use a router to do whatever you want, like cup holders, foot holds for a grill, etc.

As built to stow the shelf you raise the forward edge. I’m suggesting that you could raise the rear edge, the one against the tailgate.

If you did the same thing with one of those flat gas 2 burner stoves that has a lid you could use it as a range table then open it up and do some cooking or boil water for coffee or cleaning your black powder barrels!
