Short Range Hunting Caliber

The OP said he wants a 50 yard rifle.

It's as if y'all are workin' hard not to mention 30-30... jus' sayin'!

Oops... it was mentioned above, but why isn't that what he's lookin' for? Are we talkin' only what can be built on an AR platform?
I love the 3030 but to up you one the 35 rem is a hammer.

Marlin !!

I hunt with .300 BLK supers at that range. Barnes Tac TX. DRT.

They always exit, and if there's a blood trail it's short and easy to follow. It's all we shoot in our 10.5" pistol.

Ain't had to track one yet with the Barnes. Bang/Flop

This thread has me wanting a bolt action 300 black out. I’m considering one of the absolutely ridiculous looking “precision bolt pistols” right now. Or maybe just a plain Jane ruger American and cut and rethread the barrel to around 10 or 11 inches.

haha there is a ton of useful info in here although it makes my search harder :p 350 legend (I've got a lower I could use), stay with 300blackout (and not get another rifle), 308 AR10, 308 bolt. Its endless!! Just need to get something and ask the wife for forgiveness instead of permission;)

I bought this little Ruger, and it is fantastic, rough as a cob, but it shoots, feed/function excellent.....................

This is 50 yards..............

The Ruger did not serve all my requirements, so I bought a Winchester M70 in 223 and had it barreled to 300 BLK..... 16 inch gun............

So I picked up a .30-30 H&R single shot from @thrillhill.

You're a bad influence.... LOL

I've got a worked over 700 in 300 Whisper with a 11 inch barrel. It's one of my Hollywood Quiet rifles with subs. There's on old school full stainless Omega 30 can on it in this picture. I stick on a much lighter Griffin Rev 45 on it now.

I also have a Mossberg MVP in 5.56 that I'm thinking about getting some extra barrels for. It's a good LEGO-type platform for me to do these AR15 based rounds on. Barrel swaps are like on Savages.

The EGW rail came today. Already had the 4x32 Nikon in Warne QD rings on the shelf.

Now to acquire some .30-30 ammo. Have been out of that caliber for a decade or so. Last one I owned was a Winchester 94 AE.

May just buy brass and dies and roll my own. Not limited to round nose projectiles for this gun. I can see great potential for 125 gr Nosler BTs or 110 gr Barnes....

I'm looking to get a rifle for hunting but the longest distance I have, that has a clear shot is about 50 yards. Since it's such a short distance would you rather have a bigger bullet with some umpfh or speed based? The rifle will be suppressed. Oh and I have a 300 blackout with a 10.5 inch barrel, would that work too?? I wasn't sure about using subsonic rounds and bullet expansion. Thanks for any help!!
7.62x39 so you don't blow up your 5.56 guns

I built a 6.8 SPC last year. It does pretty good. I’m working on finding the right load now.

How about the .350 Legend ? Anyone have one and has an opinion? It seems the ammo is cheap and readily available.
My 16" 350 Legend put in solid work last year and I expect to do the same this year with it. The Hornady 170s leave 1/2" exit wounds and easy to observe blood trails, but I've not had one run far enough to really need the blood trail to find the deer.

I have no idea how it pairs with a suppressor though. I think it's safe to say that 300 BLK and 8.6 BLK are going to be the superior suppressed choices. I've been eyeing those Ruger American Rancher 300BLKs for a while for exactly this kind of hunting. Those those thing are insanely quiet.

I just picked up a new gen 2 Ruger American ranch in 6.5 Grendel for me to play with and my son to use for hunting inside 200 yards. Hopefully I can get some decent speed with 100 gr bullets.

Seems like a sweet little rifle. Haven’t shot it yet though.

I got to take my 16 inch Grendel bolt action out today and with 29.4 grains of benchmark powder and a 100 grain Hornady ELD bullet I shot under an inch at 100 yards with a four power scope and velocity was 2575. I’m pretty impressed with the speed of that bullet out of a short barrel.
