Grandson has committed now I have to hold up my end of the bargain. Need a starter O/U 12 gauge suitable for the hunter education program. Needs to be 'moderately' priced. Any suggestions?

The Miroko shotguns are as good as any usually for about half the price of a name brand. Shop the gun forums, they're out there but the one problem is the guns are usually in fixed chokes so shop wisely.

Guns made by Huglu (under a couple different brands) in Turkey are well made and frequently reasonably priced.

Are they doing trap or skeet?

Used 1100
Used Browning, mossberg, or ruger red label if you find a screaming deal.

@Bailey Boat got any leads?

FWIW, he does not need 2 shots for the tournament unless he breaks 20 and goes to tie break. Tie break is doubles.

I have a Charles Daley (Miroku) 12 ga O/U in rough shape (cosmetically) that I bought for a winter time "project" that I've never gotten around to that I could turn loose. Fixed choke (IC/Mod) 26" barrels...

Friend offered to let the youngun borrow a Browning B2000 with option to buy. I've got an 1100 sporting clays in 20ga with only 3 rounds down the tube for function test but I don't want him to be under gunned. I should go ahead and sell or trade it for something else.

Looks like a fixed IC/M would work.
I already have a CZ452 for the 22 comp.
Needing a bow also now. Looking for a decent bow with 35-55# draw weight.................... Blade runners and Drop Tine don't have anything they have both been cleaned out of these bows for the Hunter Ed stuff. He can't hold the let off on my bows and I don't want to screw with them. Never ends.

Thanks for the help folks. I'm scrambling right now.

Get him a sling and scope for that 22 and teach him to use the sling. My daughter was the best shooter on her team, the second best shooter was another girl I made a sling for. They help a lot.

Let him shoot the 1100 this year, at least to start. My daughter was excited about shotgun but hated shooting trap. I'd save your money there. Can't go wrong with an 1100. Get a skeet or light modified choke for him.

Find a Diamond infinity edge or edge pro or one of the Mission bows by Matthews. They are highly adjustable. A lightly used one is fine. I have a bow but still trying to get my youngest daughter to shoot this year. Get a decent sized front stabilizer for it. For new shooters the single pin sight might be easier to learn. And get him a release for it. Then check back with drop tine about some lessons.

I've got to get a bow for my oldest who plans to shoot with the high school team this year. We just shot 4-H and he did fair.

He has claimed my Browning Gold as his shotgun. My youngest shot my Rem 1100 LT-20 during 4-H and the gun isn't the issue.

Local high school shoots in-line trap? where as 16 yard trap at state. is that correct?

This^ Get the cheap GI web sling and teach him how to use the loop and hasty sling holds. Or just get him to an Appleseeds. :)

Everything is shot further at state. Rifle, bow, and trap. Tournaments are on a visible thrower most of the time. State is on a legit trap field.

I’d recommend staying away from lower end o/u shotguns. Find a used beretta 390/391 series shotgun, and have someone teach him how to mount the gun properly so that the gun can be fit to him.

Got him a used PSE Rally, nice little bow with simple adjustments. His arms are long and the draw length is maxed out just at the right length. Will shoot arrows right out of the box. Worked with him last weekend on technique, he picked it up dang quick. Only problem now is to make him quit when he gets tired so he won't pick up bad habits. I loosened it up to about 40# and will increase poundage when he doesn't know I've done it. I'm not a fan of whisker biscuits but it will do for now.

Have to change the scope out on the CZ, can't be above 9x. I need to get whatever ammo they plan on using even though the lot numbers won't match. I zero'd it off 7 different brands and it did fine but it lasered in on old Win SuperX and of course I have less than a brick left of that lot number. Luckily it didn't like the higher dollar stuff like my 40x's do.

Decided against the O/U. As mentioned above the lower end stuff ain't gonna cut it. Gonna do some trading for an 1100 12 ga.

Thanks for all your input. I just hope he sticks with it.

For our team you can supply your own 22 ammo. And it makes a huge difference, as I'm sure you know. Zero it in on what works best, then ask the coach when the team starts meeting. Each round shot is 20 shots. How many rounds you get per practice depends on how many shooters and how your coach sets things up.

And here are this years rules if you want to check them out.

I stand by what I said earlier about my M2000
Is it the nicest? Nope. But it's inexpensive and busts clays.
Since he's new, maybe trying a lower end shotgun until you know for sure that he's interested
Ive seen a handful of kids come out for our shooting team and quit after a month or two.
Some had just got a nice, shiny, new shotgun too.

Well he now gets to shoot my 1972 Winchester 1200, 28 or 30" barrels, Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes. Going to re=check the pattern on it this weekend. This was my first shotgun bought with my own money when I turned 18. He can learn on it and we'll see what happens.

Chief, what distance would you pattern the gun for? I've got a bunch of Rem field loads from my dove hunting days, 1 1/8 with #8 shot. I didn't shoot much trap in my youth.
