Can anyone recommend a range or place to shoot shotgun within a reasonable drive of the Charlotte area that isn't skeet/sporting clays only? Having a heck of a time finding a range that isn't members only to throw some slugs/shot down range for function/patterning checks.

You can shoot slugs at Firepower:
I've watched people shoot buck and birdshot there and not get thrown out, but that was years ago.

Ammunition Types

Our rang is set up for pistol calibers only. No rifle calibers (no 5.56 or 308). Shotguns are allowed if using Buck or slug ammunition. Please call ahead and we will be happy to tell you if we allow for your particular firearm.

Just want to make one trip? What distance you looking for?

I can probably meet you at PHA, which is where I’m a member. Several open pits where you can shoot whatever you want, with few exceptions (like no full auto). It’s just off I-85 at exit 84. Not a bad ride at all if you live on the north/east side of Charlotte. No charge for guests.

Thanks! Sounds like this would work for me.

May just take you up on that. Looks like they also have a 200 yd range? Wouldn't mind making a trip to get a couple rifles sighted in as well. I'm just southwest of Charlotte on the SC line, so it'd only be just over an hour for me.

Aren't you CRPC member anymore? I thought you were.

No, dropped my membership years ago. Thought about renewing but they made rejoining way more complicated, and I had no interest in NRA affiliated clubs anymore.

Quick question for you - do they allow M855/green tips at PHA? I saw the caliber limitations online, but didn't see any mention of lead core only, etc. Thanks

As far as I know, yes. Mainly because only the pistol ranges have steel set up. You’re shooting your own targets at the rifle ranges and tactical bays. (There used to be one piece of steel at 200yds, but I’m not sure if it’s still there or not…haven’t been on that particular range in at least a year)

You're always welcome to join me at VOD. You can do pretty much anything as long as you're safe and respectful.
Appreciate the offer, may have to take you up on that if I'm ever up your way. No issues on safety and respect - all those years of competing in smallbore have permanently engrained "cease fire, cease fire, ground all rifles, open all bolts" into my brain. I'm pretty much zero tolerance when it comes to flagging someone or handling weapons with someone downrange!
