Why Madman, this hasn’t been reported yet, how do you know this happened?

Because I was there.

I was on Leon st, talking to a homeowner when I heard a single shot, then four more in rapid succession. I never thought they were firecrackers, I know gunshots when I hear them. ;)

Shots were fired at 11:36 this morning, police car showed up at 12:16. So luckily for me, I was not taking fire, I never thought I was. It really felt surreal. I’m glad I wasn’t shot at, though I really felt calm as it was happening... :/

It may be unrelated but at 11:42’ish, a red Toyota sped like the devil out of the street. I mean on a 15mph street, he was doing 55mph easy...

Spoke to the police, but he didn’t ask my name or other details, I really had nothing to give him. :(

My cool story for the day.

Been a lot shootings in town this year, that made the news.

When I lived in town hearing gunfire was a pretty common occurrence, probably at least as common as it is out here where people shoot on their land, difference being usually it was after dark. Also hear it over the radios of visiting officers at work pretty often, not as much first hand exposure since they punched a road through the land Waughtown St residents used to shoot on.

Probably 99% of the crimes you will never hear about.

While studying at UNCG I quickly discovered how much crime there is either a) ON campus, or b) right next to campus
They had a text service set up - about every morning I woke up to a text where there was some nonsense going on

I spent a year as a campus police officer at WSSU. I can tell you that the school policy is that NO crime happens on campus.

Yeah well that school has a lot of backwards things about it.
-I asked for a meeting with their head of the history department - said I would need to apply first (lol, so I can give you 70 bucks?)
-Their Dean's list standards are/were lower than other public universities

Another problem in this society, lets just stick our heads in the sand. We will out right lie to the students and parents, to keep getting the money.

I tell people that, as a rule, "You get one free shot." When they ask what that means, I tell them that if nobody sees you, you can very likely get away with one shot in a neighborhood, and likely all it'll do is cause people to think "What was that?" or "Nah, couldn't be a gun shot."

But if you fire MORE than one shot, all bets are off.

This, of course, involves small caliber, low power rounds like .22LR, .38, 9mm, etc. Break out the 30-06 and this rule of thumb probably won't hold water.

When we’re you at UNCG? While it certainly wasn’t best area when I was there (transferred there in 2000 and graduated 2002) it didn’t seem that bad. I lived a block away from campus off of Tate Street and Spring Garden. I used to take semi-drunken walks regularly after midnight, just because I was an idiot then, and never had an issue, could have just been really lucky...

Heh! I can see how this would go over with me:

ME: "I'm thinking about enrolling in some courses to complete my degree. What's the crime rate on campus?"

WSSU: "We don't have any crime on campus."

ME: "Well, I guess I'll take my money to another college campus. Have a nice day."

WSSU: "Wait! What do you mean?"

ME: "I value honesty in personal and professional dealings above all else. The fact is that there is NEVER "no crime" on a college campus, which means you're bullsh*tting me. I don't do business with liars."

I'm happy you weren't being shot at! And glad my car is grey!!!

Yeah, at least the local community college I went to disclosed a rape and a stabbing. It sure made me stay clear of stairwells if I could and keep my pepper spray in my hand if I had to use the stairs...

Akron is a rough area

My ol' neighborhood. I lived on Tise Ave back in the late '80's. Remember a report of a guy (generic civilian) getting shot in the neck as he chased after someone who'd stolen his car... Sounds like it hasn't improved much.

Dollars to donuts says it was drug related.
No doubt.
They had gang shooting last month? That spiraled into a number of retaliatory shootings, don't know that it got stopped, they collared many of the participants, pretty much just the first two of the series made the news.

I used to rehearse at a guys house around that area probably 15 years ago. It's always been a sketchy area. He used to have me park behind him on cold nights so he could warm up his truck so it wouldn't get stolen!

I am SOOOO glad we moved out to Davidson Co! Our old house on Buchannan, I could hear all kinds of gunfire on a regular basis. What the hell is wrong with people?

Do you really think anyone will take that bet? LOL

I'll be going by there Thanksgiving morning on Hwy 52. I'll speed up and hunker down as I go by.

Many, many years ago there used to be a little mom n pop place right beside Hwy 52 and Akron Drive. Akron Diner or Akron Drive In, can't remember. It was always a pretty good place to get a bite to eat. This was way before there was a fast food place on every corner.

I mean I don’t mind hearing shots in the country, but who practices range time in the city like that? The street is heavily residential.

I want to spend money on thermal underwear for warmth, not Kevlar lining.. ;)

The police have told us many times that the robberies in the immediate area are drug related. The first time, I couldn't believe our tiny town could have such a bad problem! But our houses keep getting broken into, our doors are still getting kicked in, people are coming in thru our windows.....very sad indeed. Hence all my security measures, including a bigger gun and the CC class. I took my gun with me early this morning to get Saturday's mail because it was about 3am. How sad is that?!
