show your deer harvest 2020

One thing I've noticed from all the post and it was true back in the 70's and 80's when I deer hunted regularly. The vast majority of the deer killed in the Carolinas is at less than 100 yards and a good many at less than 50. Nothing has changed in 40 years and I still get amused when I'm in gun shops and someone buys a 300 Win Mag with the largest scope in the shop.

I use big glass but just in 3x9. I hunt on 4 during daylight and 3 at dusk and dawn. I’ve shot deer at less than 15 feet on a couple occasions. Most of my rifle kills are within now distances.

Best was in SC. I had the magnification up thinking I’d shoot something on the other side of the creek. Then one came trotting right at me on the ground. About 15’ and I could not even shoulder the rifle since he was looking at me. He got distracted and I tilted the rifle up on my knee. Found his front leg in the scope, centered it, and raised it until it was all brown. DRT with a .270 shot like a pistol off my knee.

Shot one yesterday with my new 308 gun site scout with sandman s. I shot this one and she dropped and the other 4 or 5 didn’t even run I could have probably shot 2 or 3 more. The sound of the bullet striking the deer from a suppressed 308 is great.

Im still weak from Covid and was by myself. I had to wrestle her ass to get her in the back of the truck. If you walk into a gas station covered in blood, while open carrying a pistol, with no mask people tend to socially distance themselves from you View attachment 283741

You shoulda bought a six pack of Twisted Tea and grumbled about "the rest of them sumbitches".

well got a yearling this evening almost got 2 with one shot but the broadhead caught the top of the deer's leg bone and shattered it, slowed it just enough that the other deer was missed. Either way, 1 more day unless I can find an urban place to hunt. little but still meat and so yummyIMG_20201231_181240037.jpg

This is it. The ONLY shot I got to take all season. Came in about 8 am on Thanksgiving Day. I wasted almost two months lol. Today, the last day, I refused to go.

I've had 4 deer this year be full of fat. I know you've seen the type I mean where it's solid but it's almost like jello and tastes awesome with ground-up meat for burger

Pics of one of the does my daughter killed this year, and of the buck I killed. There definitely seemed to be more fat on them than normal.

Well, going into the new year with a bang! I’ve been hunting the past couple days trying to get one more doe for the freezer. 10 minutes before I couldn’t see anymore three does stepped out about 200-250 yards away. Shot this one with my new 6.8 SPC pistol build. I have been waiting to try it out. Unfortunately my shot was a touch too far back. Pouring down rain when I was trying to find her and the blood trail was really good until the rain washed it away. Luckily I picked up my brothers thermal monocular to test out before I buy one. Found her 200 or so yards away from where I shot her in a thicket standing up but definitely hurt. Finished her off with the 22 at 20 yards away. Finally got the freezer for 10 minutes before season went out.849620D3-B220-497B-8B36-BD15F011F7D0.jpeg

I understand wanting a full freezer I got 2 chest freezers full and worked on filling a third. All the deer I got this year have been big fat ones cept for the last but it was the last deer I saw. I was outside almost all day today hoping for 1 more lol bout 15 mins before they should've been coming out the downpour started and I wasn't gonna shoot another deer in the rain

Congratulations on finding her. That had to be stressful.

I had three come out about 200yds out, but I kept losing them in the fog. They will be back next season.

Thanks. The fog hadn’t set in yet when I shot her. I got down about 5-10 minutes after that to look for blood. Glad I did. I followed the trail for 40 yards before the rain washed the rest away. I was trying to navigate with a umbrella through the woods it was raining so hard. My brother’s thermal is what helped find her. I hate wounding a deer and not being able to find it.

View attachment 284555View attachment 284556View attachment 28455710 point, 8 point and 2 doe. Got everything but the 10 point during archery season. 10 point with a subsonic 205gr Lehigh out of a sig mcx pistol.
what area of the state did you harvest the big bucks in? Those are real nice and we have one on my camera similar to that 10 in mint hill/matthews area wondering if you got him. Were you happy with how the Lehigh performed? I have been wanting to take my 300bo hunting and did one time but am leery of the subsonic bullets not doing enough damage. You killed some great deer this season. Congrats!

Got him right over the Mec county line on a friend’s property in between Harrisburg and minthill. Probably 10 miles from minthill so might be the same bloodline as the one you have? The others were on my property near minthill during archery season. I can just about see my buds property if I stand on my roof.

The Lehigh works great. I’ve been hunting with them for 2 years now and haven’t had one run more than 75 yards. Great expansion (only had one pass all the way through), the down side is no blood trail. So plan on dry tracking if they run out of sight. But with the subs you can hear them run after the shot and where they crash. I’ve literally watched 5 out of the 7 I’ve hit with it drop within about 30-40 feet. It has about 200 foot pounds of energy more than a 230gr 45acp. So it reeks havoc on there vitals.

I’m wondering if all the excess fat this year is from the abundance of mast. This year we couldn’t walk in the yard or woods without stepping on nuts, (and not mine dragging the ground). Just seemed like an over abundance of acorns and black walnuts and whatever other nuts are out there.

I've got one stand that I can stretch it out to about 260 yards, and the other, max at 150 yards. The buck my son killed came back out at 20 steps on the powerline stand that has the 260 yard shot. If I hunt anywhere else on my 2 properties, it will be in the woods.
