Really been thinking of an optics setup for my wife, also she doesn't manage long striker fired trigger pills as well so a hammer gun would be good [she shot my CZ quite well.] Her hands don't have the reach and strength to manage as well anymore.

Not a holster gun, just to grab at home in case. Romeo 1 has shake awake which is ideal, hard to get older eyes on irons in low light especially under stress.

Throw a light on this and it might be a perfect at home choice; adjustable travel trigger with short reset.
I am thinking of her forgetting to cock to SA and leaving a long DA which might be an issue but it won't be too much different vs many striker guns [My 220 and 239 actions are much better than stock; expect I can make this the same.] Decocker so easy and safe stand down.

I'll look around and check it out:

no comments on sights, but one can’t go wrong with a 229 bedside
as for forgetting to cock, cock and lock it

That’s still a sizable gun for a woman if she has trouble with a heavy slide. I’m thinking an M&P Shield EZ killed for an optic. Just my .02.

Plenty of striker fired guns with short and easy triggers. Check out Walther or Canik.

Are optics really needed for inside-the-house distances? And optics might not help any in the dark without a light.

A P229 requires a good bit of force to rack the slide and the DA trigger is pretty heavy. If an optic is not required, the S&W Shield EZ's slide is super-easy to rack. My Beretta PX4 with a D spring is also easy to rack and has about 6-lb. DA and 4-lb. SA trigger pulls. Either the S&W or Beretta costs about a third of the Sig's price

I think she would do well with a dot - and I do expect to hang a light on it as well.

Dot allows you to focus on the target and keep sight picture - under stress I think that’s a good feature.

My other Sig DAs are pretty darn good after some TLC. This will get left racked and ready in a strongbox so not overly concerned about rackability.

As most probably know, I am a pistol optic connoisseur, but unless your wife practices and becomes proficient with a dot, I don’t think I would recommend one for a HD gun. They’re not something you can just pick up and use easily unlike a optic on a rifle. I would much more recommend a weapon light.

Side note. There are a lot better choices in the striker fired world than that heavy 229

A few points from my household. Beretta 92G decock only model is a solid choice on par with a 229. A double action trigger should provide enough resistance to not have a ND if you're fishing for it in a drawer while charged. Makes it foolproof with no safety to remember and no slide to run to charge the gun.

I agree that you need to train with the red dot.

If you have a 229 with a dot the body of the dot provides a great aid to charge the gun with.

My heavy 229 handles extremely well (maybe the weight helps with this) and my night table never complains about how big or heavy the handgun is, nothing like a full sized battle handgun at the ready

Mass isn’t a disadvantage for an at home gun - helps soak up recoil which she also struggles with.
Believe the legion optics setup has cowitnessed irons so that helps with dot pickup.
Handled a 226 today and it wasn’t too massive - I’ll compare weight specs vs my 220.
Appreciate all the thoughts and opinions (even the wrong ones 😉)

I have other target optic setups she can use to judge.

👍

1. Go to range with wide selection of rentals
2. Let wife decide what she likes from reputable manufacturer
3. ?????
4. PROFIT!

Not following the logic behind a DA/SA for a lady who struggles with a striker fired trigger? The P229 is a decent pistol that my wife shoots extremely well, but she also has a lot of trigger time with different pistols. If the idea is to go to SA mode first, the P229 is not the right tool. There are SAO models for that.

I think choosing a pistol for a wife is, generally speaking, a bad idea. They need to manipulate and shoot different guns to make their own choice. Even if this requires effort, time and cost, it’s worth it.
