Thoughts on Sig m17/m18? Thinking about picking one up at some point. I have a bad taste in my mouth from Sig especially the QC and reliability and safety issues of their last few drops. IE p365 and p320. Wondering if any of you have one and what you think of it- Reliability? Performance?

I have used the M17 quite a bit for both professional and personal use. My unit was issued them a little while back and we've completed 2x ranges with them. Much easier to shoot than the M9s so our qual rate and hit prob. increased. I can't recall a single malfunction in prob. the almost 5k rounds we've put through them that wasn't due to shooter error (limp wristing, etc...)

I also own a civilian M17 and have prob. 2k rounds through it to include a couple of 2 gun center biathlon matches. Runs great. Again, cant recall any issues that weren't due to my error, like the time I installed the extractor backwards and it shot halfway across the range. Believe it or not I found it lol...

It's a bit big and clunky IMO for what it is, but ergo are far better than a glock. Bore axis is a bit high esp. depending on what RDS you pair with it... That's my only real complaint. Overall, It is a fine gun that works well in all the of the experience I've had with it.

Had an M17 and sold it. Not a bad gun by any means, but it just didn’t make me want to shoot it.

The trigger was awful. Slack, and then a 6-lb rolling mush that I hesitate to describe as a “break.” No wall—just pretravel, heavy travel, then a bit of overtravel. That said, the triggers seem to vary significantly between guns.

It also had a weird recoil stroke. You know how most 9mm polymer guns sort of “snap” into battery, while a heavier .45 has more of a “rolling push” recoil? The M17 has that slower, pushier feel without the muzzle rise. It’s not bad, just unusual.

The optics options are pretty limited without aftermarket plates.

The factory grip module has a small magwell and an atypically vertical grip, so it doesn’t feel “normal” during reloads until you retrain.

Accuracy was great. The awful trigger wasn’t a problem shooting freestyle. The thumb safety was in the correct location and felt familiar in use as a 1911 shooter. I had zero malfunctions over a half-dozen matches.

I don't have anything to say pro/con the SIG, my issue is with the DOD T&E and procurement process, which I am fully aware is full of politics, back-room deals, and creative writing. But it seems like this is a solid gun.

Apparently the sig contract came in like 130 million less than the glock contract which doesnt seem pssible

Yes, hence my skepticism lol. It's not like SOCOM did not get Glock 19s in an insanely cheap deal. But Beretta did the same thing back in the 80s when it replaced the 1911. As I recall there was weird math in that contract.

What unit are you with? Everyone from the Air wing to the rent s cops at the gate have the M18, how has it not made it to the infantry yet?

The last US government contract M9 was delivered to the USAF last month. I think you are going to see the M9 in military use for a while to come.

Yup, just PCSed to MCAS Yuma. I’m a Corpsman.

I am working with the SOIDCs/SARCs with MARSOC/recon for training where I work, I have been working with Master Chief Mark Boyle. He and I were talking yesterday, he told me something I did not know: the navy is the only branch that the senior enlisted are the SMEs and who still can practice. He told me that the army's 18Ds and ranger medics 'age out' of the hands-on and go into strict leadership and out of their NEC (sorry--MOS), same with AFSOC.

That makes sense. We have a lot fewer people in the Navy and tend to do more with less. That’s why you may see a Senior Chief or even Master Chief still working on a boat or ship as an IDC.

I carry an issued M18; I'd opt for the X-Carry. Just my opinion. I prefer my G19.5 but it's not a bad weapon.

I actually had a hard time choosing between a P365XL and the X-Carry. Ended up getting a P365XL just due to the size and I didn't have any interest in dealing with adapters for an optic as I didn't want the DPP.

They're good weapons, but I don't absolutely love it..that said, with it being issued I can't really make it mine. I'd probably like it more if I could change a few things.

Edit: Also, I don't find it difficult to conceal AIWB w/claw. Not as easy as the G19, but it's not bad. Probably the upper end of what I would consider concealable with normal clothes though.

The M18s are our issue guns. Too big for concealed carry, but a helluva stock trigger.

With a quality AIWB it's easy to conceal. If you swap the sub-compact frame on it's even easier.

Correct, with a Tier 1 it's very easy to conceal. I've carried a modified M18 for over 2 years. I don't overtly dress to conceal, I wear t-shirts most of the time. I'm not skinny, but not super fat either.

My M18 isn't stock tho... I deleted the manual safety, installed a flat Apex trigger shoe and swapped to the X style grip modules. Sounds like a lot, but it really wasn't.

My M18 isn't the best trigger in my safe, but it's predictable, and I can shoot it well. The modularity of the grip modules is fantastic. I have the sub-compact (15 rounds) and x-carry (17 rounds) for grips for everyday concealed. I then have a stippled full sized grip with a magwell for OWB battle belt setup. I run a Romeo 1 Pro on it. Not the best optic, but it has yet to let me down.

There are so many options for configuring the M18/p320 that if you want to, you can make it work for you.
