Good morning all,
I just joined the forum yesterday and have been getting so many welcoming responses from the members. Thank you for that.
During the past few years, I've acquired several Sig pistols mainly the SSE(Stainless Steel Elite) models. I recently became aware that the Equinox models are run through the Sig Custom Shop. I've been very happy with the SSE models. They are extremely reliable and accurate as one would expect from an expensive gun, and I just like the look with the satin stainless and Rosewood grips.
My question is this:
In your opinion, are the Equinox models as good, not as good, or better than the SSE models? Put another way, what advantages would one expect from a Custom shop made pistol?
Thanks for your input.

I've handled quite a few equinox (but never brought myself to purchase one, no clear value proposition), I have owned/own new and old, German and American, regular and SSE models.....my opinion is that the fit and finish on the SSE elite with the German frame and older short extractor is about the best of the best custom shop or not, however for fit/function features/price I think the legion is an overall best buy with no superfluous features other than the logo
Sorry I couldn't give better detail on the Equinox but I feel they are more marketing than function

Thanks for your message. We’re in agreement that the German made Sigs are superior to the NH made Sigs. I have a 1985 vintage German P220 that was imported to Sig’s old facility in Tyson’s Corner, Va. that groups tighter than any other Sig I’ve got. However, I recently spoke to someone who has two P229’s, an Equinox and a Legion who claims his Equinox is more accurate than the Legion. It’s all subjective I Suppose.
Thanks again for your input and best regards,

It is be a gun to gun comparison. There is also no advantage to a "Sig Custom Shop" pistol IMHO. They are still factory spec guns with very little if any hand fitting. The person assembling the gun might be under a smaller daily quota of pistols they are assembling but they are not customizing or machining these pistols any differently than the standard production guns. On paper the Legion is interesting but the PVD finish is horrible. If you are going to spend real coin on a Sig get the gun that looks the way you want it to and send it to Robert Burke the Sig Armorer. Get his QTR system and you will get a better gun then anything coming out of Exter. IMHO

The Sig Armorer sounds like the real Custom Shop. I wasn’t aware this was available, and thanks for letting me know. I’ve got a P226 SSE in .40 S&W that I may just send to him.
Thanks for your info and best regards,

I believe the accuracy is more of a fluke than a correlation to the build. They're tolerances are still pretty tight among the product lines. I actually had to send a P220 stainless elite in to have a threaded barrel fit to the receiver, as it was not just a drop in, though it was a Sig barrel.

Yeah, I guess that justifies the extra$$$. Marketing 101.

I believe the only things special about my Custom Shop Sig was that the slide was engraved, it had the Custom Shop logo, and it was made in limited numbers. If there was any thing else special about the gun, I was not aware of it.

The accuracy out of the box of the Sigs I’ve got speaks to their tight tolerances. They are capable in the right hands of amazing accuracy, more accurate than they display when I shoot them. I was just curious to know from Sig owners if they consider Custom Shop models i.e. the Equinox more accurate.
Thanks for your input and best regards,

Thanks
Understand. Thanks.

I love my Equinox 938. I do NOT believe there is any accuracy or reliability improvement to the equinox models, although they are excellent guns. I am generally a huge fan of their appearance. My best handgun accuracy remains pretty much any 9mm 226, regardless of whether it was made in Germany or here.

Thanks for your reply. I too have a 938, the polished engraved model, and a 226 in 40, both very accurate. However, the most accurate Sig I’ve got is a 1986 German made 220. From the responses I’ve gotten, Custom Shop Sigs aren’t any more accurate than their standard models.

I own a p229 in both an equinox and a legion. Both are in 9mm. The equinox for me is consistently more accurate. I added the short reset trigger to it. The legion is not far behind at all however.

Thanks for your input Jerry. I have been considering an Equinox, probably a P226, and from all the responses I’ve been getting, a Custom Shop Model doesn’t give you much if any over and above a “standard” model. My p229 SSE is so accurate that I can’t imagine any off the shelf gun being any more accurate. I think I’ll reconsider getting an Equinox model.
Thanks again and best regards,
Joe

I might also offer that my equinox is one of 115 made also per Sig. I don't know if rarity fits into your considerations.

Rarety is great from a resale standpoint for sure. I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks.

My P320C has replaced a G19 and a FNS9 as my EDC carry gun. I shoot it well enough to feel confident, it's ergonomically pleasing, and if I don't like the grip I can easily change the whole thing.

The 320 is an awesome weapon. I just recently acquired the M 17 version and I live it!!

Honestly that is what I refer to as an instant collectible. Sig under Cohen is famous for them. They make tons of short run special runs which are basically the base guns with cosmetic changes. Just like Cohen did with Kimber or what Talos does with a lot of different manufacturers. Artificial rarity does not help resale unless the product is actually different IMHO. Sig these days is a great marketing company that happens to make VG guns. They are no longer a great gun manufacturer IMHO.
