NFA Talk does a couple metering sessions each year. They had one last weekend, and the only other one this year is Sat 9/7 in Martin, GA. I’ve never been to one, but that isn’t too far away.

When I asked for details, this was the answer:

Me: What’s the general deal with these events? Never been to one. I have my share of hosts and cans, but I’d assume there’s some kind of plan going into it? RHR is ~2.5 hours away. That’s the one I’m looking at in case the specific event matters.

Them: Bigwaylon you basically bring anything you'd like to meter and we typically start with a certain caliber say 22. Run through all the 22 stuff then move over to 9mm and continue till we have pretty much been through it all.

Apparently all kinds of stuff to either shoot or see somebody else shoot. I’m hoping to have my most recent two F1 cans done by then, but not sure if that’ll happen. I’ve metered some of my stuff before at Rugged’s shop, but this event definitely interests me.

Is that anything anybody else might be interested in attending?

Huh....2 hours for me. Would love to have my F1 can metered..

Anybody considering attending?

I hope to have my three F1 cans back from getting a recore. I also hope to have my two newest ones (1.25”x6.5” 22LR and 9mm) done my then. The first scenario is the most likely, but fingers crossed for both. :D

I would like to, if only to get info out there for my Griffin Alpha/Paladin since I didn't see it anywhere on that google doc, but I've been so busy lately, I doubt I'll be able to.

btw thanks for sharing the link to that doc, definitely bookmarking that one! I'm a data guy so that's right up my alley.

What are the dates for this

I’m going to bump this one instead of starting a new thread, as the explanation earlier in the thread holds true.

Due to all the COVID crap, NFA Talk only scheduled one event for 2020. It’s Saturday, October 10th at Red Hill Range in Georgia.

I know nothing more than what you can read in their thread here: http://nfatalk.org/forum/showthread.php?t=17058

Never been before...but I’m planning to go this year.

Would love to attend, but I gotta work :(

Wish I could go to something like that sometime. Would love to see my 45 carbine metered in its current state and when I remake it in all its glory.

So this is a yearly thing?

I think they normally do 2-3 a year. You can look through the Community Events section on their site and see them being discussed. The metering data is in the Review section below CE.

How do they measure the noise? Standard noise meter? Or do they have a special arrangement to collect reading simultaneously at different locations?

Curious as I was looking at Noise Meters last night and they’re not horribly expensive.

If they’re not horribly expensive...you’re either:
1. Not looking at the right thing
2. A lot richer and more free-spending than I thought

They have multiple dB meters that have been calibrated.

For example...

https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2019/09/27/impulse-noise-system/amp/

That’s the latest and greatest system. That meets both the D and E mil-standard. You won’t find a price on the site, but I’ve read it’s in the $60K ballpark.

There are only a handful (5 or less) of meters that have a sampling rate fast enough to accurately capture a gunshot. Without that, you have garbage. Which is what most websites (including Silencer Shop) publish as far as dB readings.

I think the guys at NFA Talk have a couple B&K 2209 analog meters which are one of the industry standards.

To whom do I write the (rubber) check???

Wow!! I must have been looking at the “cheapies” at <$500. I’ll go back to my corner now...

Yeah, there are a lot of those out there. Some even capable of recording the level of gun shot if it was sustained...like a jet engine or rock concert. But they can’t consistently catch the peak. They might record the highest on the rise, the peak, or the drop...and not consistently between shots.

You can get into it for less than $60K. Probably in the $10K-$20K range for a setup with meter, mics, etc. But not for $1000 or less if you want real results.

That’s an impressive dollar amount. Even $10k is a very serious investment.

Event is a week from today...

Event is tomorrow. Gates open at 8a. Probably gonna be some rain. I’m trying to meet some of them (never met any of these people) at Cracker Barrel at 7a.

Anybody actually planning on going? I know @wired can’t make it now, but wasn’t sure if others were interested.

I’m hoping to try 13 rifle cans on the same host to see how it goes. Seven commercial cans and six F1 cans recored by ECCO.

Wish I could have gone. So what did you meter?
15 cans on a 10.5” 5.56 host. 13 of mine, and 2 others that were there. Guy said he’d email me the data in the next couple days. I’ll post it all up at that point.

What other items of interest did you see there?
The chainsaw gun was there (it’s in the video below). Lots of MGs.

I didn’t actually see a lot. I’d never been before and didn’t know what to expect. The rain kept the crowd down for sure. Gates opened at 8a, and by 10:15a nobody had fired a shot. I was annoyed. So I asked the guy from KGMade if he was ready to go, and he was bored like I was. So we spent the next good bit of time shooting 15 cans on my host. I pulled out of the parking lot at noon. Turns out the rain stopped about that time and so I’m not sure how the afternoon went.

here’s a video one of the guys made:
