Have you ever watched a silent movie from the old days?
Some of the very best if you get curious.-

-The Hunchback of Notre Dame. 1923. Starring Lon Chaney- Chaney's performance as the Hunchback is absolutely captivating. This is one you can't take your eyes away.
-The Kid. 1921. Starring Charlie Chaplin- Hilarious and heart-wrenching. Will put a tear in your eye.
-Nosferatu. 1921. Starring Max Schreck.- The original Dracula. Will give your kids nightmares. You wont believe how scary they made movies then.
-The Phantom of the Opera. 1925. Starring Lon Chaney.- Another Lon Chaney masterpiece. The movie sets are phenomenal.
-Metropolis. 1927. Starring Alfred Able.- Considered to be the first real SciFi movie, the special effects are outstanding.
-BenHur: A tale of The Christ. 1925. Stunningly elaborate with a budget of 4 million dollars when most movies of the time were made for well less than $100,000.
-Cleopatra. 1912. Starring Helen Gardner.- A very early edition, but still very good. Has topless nymphs throwing flowers before Cleopatra's entrance into Rome. And I bet you thought your generation invented sex.

I've showed some of these to folks and the reaction is always the same, roll of the eyes like seriously?
Within 15 minutes they're enthralled and totally engrossed in what they're watching.
If anything, you'll come away understanding that most dialogue in todays movies is often just useless filler, and that you really don't need to be told what you're seeing.

if you live in an area that wants to be fancy, look for showings of old silent films with live symphonies doing the music.
it's worth doing once

When I lived in Grand Rapids back in the early 80s, a pizza joint showed silent movies accompanied by a movie theater Wurlitzer organ. Great fun!

I think I went there once with some cousins from Kentwood.
