Silent Sam statue toppled at UNC

We'll agree on some things and disagree on others. That's reality and is acceptable. What's unacceptable is when people are are trying to disagree or pretend like they don't understand something as simple as the fact that the rebel flag represent negative symbolism because it has been and still is in use by the most prominent hate groups in this country for the past 150 years.

I have chosen to not care about the opinions of the 3 last standing members of the kkk. (or any other supposed hate group)

Wonder how many of those terrorists would like to see more of Durham in Chapel Hill, i.e. Eve Carson.

Go ahead.
Nobody is telling you to be part of anything but there are folks that choose to believe the truth.
Your opinion is fine for you but it’s not relevant to the rest of us.

The truth is not the truth. Didn't someone just coin that phrase recently? :D

You seem to be doing a lot of protesting about something that's not relevant to you.

You can go around flipping the bird to people and telling them it means you're number one but don't be surprised when you get punched in the nose.

I saw where someone up thread has said anyone trying to meet the lefts violence with their own will be viewed as white supremacists and should use legal means. Maybe people are getting pissed off and talking about fighting back is because the legal means have resulted in nothing happening just like when the statue was torn down in Durham. Violence begets violence, and boy has the left been ramping it up for the past two years. That’s all I’ve got to say on the topic.

Don't take the bait. I think antifa and their ilk are desperate to get consevatives to lash out and commit violence... Look at the attention they got for it in Charlottesville.

At the root, they're like mean toddlers throwing a tantrum. The best thing to do is ignore them. If you aren't there, they can't put you in a position where you must defend yourself.

They prove they are cowards by pulling these stunts in the safest spaces they can find for themselves. And their stunts are not only empty acts of symbolism, but they're piss poor long term strategy. The progressives are fracturing a bit here in Durham, independents are pushed away, and they have only hardened the resolve of the opposition.

I think the statues have whatever value people give to them. In Durham's case, the base remains, with its inscription. To me it speaks even louder now with the bronze having been taken the way it was. And, there is one less excuse for the victimization profiteers here in Dtown to hang their hats on.

Count me as another brownish guy who appreciates the value of remembering the lessons of the war with regard to central government's ills... Both Union and Confederate.

I occasionally have the stars and bars on my truck bumper. I do it mostly because it wads up the panties of the leftist regressives. I'm not from the south (but from the south-west) but I've lived here much of my life. The stars and bars is more about giving the finger to Federal overreach than in support of the slavery that happened 150 yrs ago. Nobody that knows me would ever call me racist---

The first amendment is not about protecting popular speech....

Hey,
If they think that’s what they need to do.

But I feel that if you still have your nose, I’m pretty safe.

One flag was the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, carried into battle by men defending their homeland from an invading army.

The other was a symbol taken on by a regime hellbent for the annihilation of an entire race and total domination of the globe under a new Third Reich.

Yeah, totally the same thing.

Statue coming back.

Future newspaper headlines: "Racist statue is put back by republican controlled NC general assembly after being torn down by anti-racist student activists".

Gee, I wonder which political party this would help just in time for the mid-terms? The next thing you know, some stupid college basketball association would threaten to take their tournament to another state, PayPal would nix plans for a call center in NC, and Apple would face backlash over expansion plans for an existing data center,... does any of this sound familiar? LOL

That is precisely what this is all about. The timing is not accidental.

You are probably correct, but when has a public employee ever hustled enough to get that back up by November? :p

If the left doesn't file a dozen lawsuits trying to prevent it from being put back then you know they are planning on using it as an issue.

Why waste time and money on lawsuits, they already got away with tearing it down once? Just wait for it to be put back then tear it down again to an even larger audience and fanfair.

Notice just came out that there is a possible rally being held tomorrow at McCorkle Place (?) and in the town proper over the issue, but they claim to not know what groups, if any, are planning to attend.

This is extremely selfish of me, but is it possible for them to burn the entire campus at Chapel Hill down? That way it would not be an option for my daughter next year. :p

Hiring managers look at the schools people attend. I wouldn't bet a possible career loss on attending that school.

Some of the stuff you post is really in a different zipcode.

I hope they don't try to burn the town down to the ground.

On a positive note this whole kerfuffle has allowed me to make my dip shit BIL's life a living hell. He is a UNC grad that was a KA and still lives in Chapel Hill. This whole mess will give me years of dinner time insults.

For the record, as a UNC grad myself, I now pull for Wake Forest.

Since this incident is not going to be allowed to be a fait accompli like prior incidents, the school's administration has gotten busy trying to distance the school from any association with the illegal act.

UNC-Chapel Hill leader: We were surprised that Confederate statue was toppled
CHAPEL HILL — Activists who tore down a century-old Confederate statue this week at North Carolina’s flagship public university took campus officials by surprise, the school’s top administrator said Thursday.

“I will tell you absolutely that we had no anticipation of any plans to tear down the statue,” Folt said while taking questions from reporters.
Right; campus official were taken by surprise after instructing the police to not interfere. Chancellor Folt is either a liar or a total fool.

CHAPEL HILL — Activists who tore down a century-old Confederate statue this week at North Carolina’s flagship public university took campus officials by surprise, the school’s top administrator said Thursday.

UNC-Chapel Hill expected about 100 people to peacefully protest the earlier arrest of an activist demanding removal of the memorial nicknamed Silent Sam, Chancellor Carol Folt said during a conference call. Instead, a larger crowd gathered Monday night, dispersed and then returned to yank down the statue as banners hid their actions from police.

“I will tell you absolutely that we had no anticipation of any plans to tear down the statue,” Folt said while taking questions from reporters.

Hogwash

Folt said she wasn’t ready to explain the non-confrontational response of campus police as activists gathered around the stone base on which the statue stood.

Bet not....be kinda hard to explain how you, local government and others suggested police turn a "blind eye" to a criminal act.

Someone needs to call this c*nt's bluff. Maybe, "Oh...you were taken by surprise and didn't know it was coming down? Well, that's a shame. Reckon now, we need to get crews to work on making repairs to the statue so it can be reset on the pedestal."

See if she balks.
