What on earth am I doing wrong? lol

I have a Remington 700 with the original bolt-knob still. When the knob is up, The clearance between it and the scope is very minimal, so I'm frequently slamming my thumb when pushing the bolt forward to chamber a round. It's bruising my thumb & is likely quite bad for my scope to get regular abuse.

I can't picture what I could be doing differently to give myself more clearance... I even looked for a bolt-knob that would come down at an angle, but I couldn't find one (I thought that was a thing?).

Thanks for any tips!

Lose weight in that thumb??? LOL.....(I kill myself)
seriously, use your fingertips, not the ham handed stuff you see on TV.....

What he said... Lift the bolt knob with you index or middle finger, hand in a "chopping" orientation.

I kinda do this: chop straight up with my thump, then, pull the bolt back with my index or middle finger. The push forward with my thumb, then down with my index finger, like turning off a switch.
