I'm not good at identifying critters, but I just had to evict this little noodle fellow from my hallway. That's a regular old blacksnake right? Harmless and beneficial?

I ushered him out unharmed with a gentle application of my Cold Steel Bushman spear (sheathed for no harm). Got to love a practical applications for man toys.

That sir, is a black snake. Mr Black Snake is your friend. He is non venomous and he loves to eat venomous snakes, squirrels, chipmunks and field mice.

The only danger to you is a possible bacterial infection if bitten. Some of them are really cool and do not mind being handled at all. Others will bite if touched and release a very horrible odor as a defense mechanism.

Either keep him or bring him to my house. I just relocated one to my back yard last week and I could always use another one.

I had a probationer grab a mating ball of black snakes. What ever there body's were releasing it looked like it had burned his skin. Probably just a bacterial infection.

Thanks for the confirmation folks.

He was gently relocated to the bush at the side of the house and left in a shady spot to collect himself. I went by a little later to see if he pressed the issue and saw him noodling off into the yard. We just did the first (late) mow of the year so I'm guessing he got lost without the long grass and wild shrubs.

I personally don't mind them even if they end up in the house, since they are pest control for free.... But the owner and my roomie is petrified of snakes.

I'll discuss more snake proofing and maybe some chemical repellent.

I had a huge blacksnake at my old house, he had a nest under the deck somewhere. I'd put out water for him so he didn't have to slither back to the creek.

My damn lawn guy chopped him up with a shovel while screaming like a cheated whore. I was so mad I had to just walk away.

Funny thing is, if it was an Alabama blacksnake, he'd have been all over it!

The exact same thing happened to me. Had one that I watched out for for about 9 years. He started at 4 ft and was over 10 ft when a guy I had helping me mow when I had pneumonia one summer chopped him up.

He was cool, I didn't play with him but when I was mowing and he was sunning himself I would just pick him up and move him to where I'd already mowed.

I never bothered mine, he was pretty chill. Even got the missus to get used to him and he was about 9 or 10 feet also. He did love that water tub though.

I've never tried to count the snakes I've moved. From 6 inches to 6 feet long. Only got bit once, little rubbing alcohol and I was good to go.
Moved the six foot chicken snake from Dad's back porch last summer, left it in the barn.

I was playing with a 5+ ft black snake one day, and he got tired of it and bit me up real good.
I figured I would just call my Vet. He would know more about snakes than the average Dr, right?
I asked if I should have any worries. He said " Well, in my line of work, I'm more worried about
the snake than you".
He had a good sense of humor. :D

Because he wasnt overly aggressive that rules out a black racer. I would say a black Eastern King Snake, aka the only good snake besides a dead one. Glad you did not kill him!

No idea. Dog was barking and when I went to see what it was, the danger noodle was sprawled on the stairs.

Black Rat, he's a GOOD GUY! For years I'll pull off the road and bring them home to eat mice & copperheads.
Rat snakes have a flat belly, their cross section is like a loaf of bread instead of round like most snakes.
They also have the mottled black & white belly with subtle patterns in the black.

Love looking at snakes for the other side of the plate of glass. Think that I got it figured out, if it is solid in color we are OK. Not sure about the ones that have a pattern on their back. Not a snake fan.

I had one under my deck/crawl space for several years... i accidently closed the door on his head, giving him a scar and a slight turn of his head, but he did okay and grew nicely to about 8 feet. Until, I guess he had taken out all the mice and was moving on... my neighbor found him in his yard and 8 ironed him.... I said, well... you just missed out on a cool helper. That dang thing would know when I was outside and would come out to where I was standing and would just lay in the sun; when I would go back in.. he would head back to the deck.
