Rock Island Auctions sends me the catalogs for their Regional Auctions (the poor people auctions) and I always place a couple bids because I figure that way they'll keep sending catalogs. I've bid on dozens and dozens of lots in the past but I always bid low and never give it another thought.

Well the other night the wife was checking one of our e-mail addresses and says, "You won your auction." I said, "What auction?" And she replied, "Something from Rock Island." I was thinking Oh crap! I couldn't even remember what I had bid on. Well it turns out I am now the proud owner of a 1917 Eddystone and a Remington 1903.

Here's the weird part though; she wasn't even mad. I just spent $1100 we hadn't expected to spend and all she could do was laugh at how surprised I was that I won. So I figure she's either spent a ton of money I don't know about yet, or she's cheating on me. I really hope it's the second, because that'll probably be cheaper. Oi...

Anywho, here's a pic of what I won. I'll update this when I actually get my grubby paws on the rifles.

Ha! I've done that... I threw out what I considered to be a low ball bid once and then I got an invoice in my email after totally forgetting to watch the auction. The Rock Island auctions have some nice stuff.

Even better, I won a pair of Mausers once because my then 1 year old was up on the counter with the computer and hit the mouse button during live bidding. No take backs on those.... apparently no one wanted to outbid me either. I broke even on those when I sold them but whew boy that was fun explaining to the wife.

“It’s better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission.”

Funny, I did the same thing on a dirt bike on eBay years ago; I didn't even have a way to transport it. Husqvarna CR125 for like $800, should've been $2k lol. Rode it for a year, learned I'm a 4 wheel guy, and sold it for $1200 in a pinch.

Cool. Congrats. I acquired my first AR in a similar way. It was back during the ban. I put in a sub $500 bid on an Olympic Arms Plinker on a Friday. Didn't check my email again until Monday, I was shocked that I'd won it. It was a good deal at the time and the gun ran fine.

It's how I got my 5 ton. Just for S&G while I was bidding on packs and other stuff to sell I said what the hell and put a $5000 bid on a really nice one in Kansas. Most of the rough ones were going for $8000 at the time. About 2 days later I get the notification that I won the bid.

It was a scramble to get it picked up and shipped back here and another $1500 on top of the 5 I'd already had to spend, but hey, I have an effing 5 ton now.

I don't see how you can get hurt at that price. That 1917 looks like it may even be original finish. Both guns look nice.

Yeah, I hope they turn out to be nice. All in, I ended up paying $666.02 for each gun. If they're in decent shape, that's not a horrible price.

Finally got my guns! I was a little upset that it took about a month to receive them, but I'm over it now. They seem to be in great shape but I won't get a chance to shoot them for a couple weeks at least. I will give Rock Island credit though, when they package something, they don't mess around! I have never gotten anything in the mail so well packaged. UPS would have really had to bring their A-game to damage those guns! And now for a few quick pics!

Very very nice score.

Excellent packing by RI too... well done. I've gotten surplus stuff with the muzzle poking out the end of the box more than once. :(

Can't wait for the range report

Those are just sexy

I did the same thing as you did. I've been wanting a International Harvester Garand for a loonnng time. At the gun show's seen them $1,800+. Anyway after putting in a order for 2 CMP rifles, I found a IHC and bought it...without telling the wife. When she found out she said "I'm happy you found one! seems like it's a great deal" I though I was being punked. I'll pay for it later I'm sure.
