  • A man in North Carolina was left seriously injured in a 'hunting accident gone wrong' where a black bear tumbled out of a tree after being shot, attacked him and then chased him off a cliff.

The black bear, which weighed about 375lbs was later found dead in a creek.

The incident on Saturday happened when a group of at least three men were hunting bears with dogs in the Great Smoky National near Mount Sterling in Hayward County.

According ABC, Captain Andrew Helton, North Carolina Wildlife Resource commission, one of the dogs spotted the bear, and while one of the men gathered them up, another shot the bear, hitting it three or four times.

The bear then 'tumbled' down from the branch and started to attack the man who shot at it, biting his body.

The man was then chased down by the bear as he attempted to flee. During the pursuit the bear chased the hunter off of a 'slight cliff' and plunged down the sharp drop with him.

Remarkably, instead of attacking the man further the bear simply wandered away.

'This is a very rare occurrence,' Helton told the Asheville Citizen-Times. 'What few [attacks] we have generally involve a dog or a mamma and cubs.'

Officials described the encounter as a 'hunting incident gone wrong'.

The area where the trio were hunting was 'remote' and it took several hours for help to arrive for the injured hunter. He'd suffered a bite to his stomach and claw marks to his leg. He also had a fractured pelvis and a back injury sustained in the fall.

The hunter was transferred to an Asheville hospital to be treated for scratches and a bite to his stomach. He also suffered a fractured pelvis in his fall from the cliff.

Oh, I know it's real! Read it elsewhwere, too. Just hadda give the writers some s**t for not even being able to get the County name right.

No disdain aimed at you!

Man, that's some rough country up that way. The other side of the road from Mt Sterling is gamelands. I've run into bear hunters in the park looking for dogs, and picked up 2 worn out dogs in the park though. The dog's have not figured out how to read a map. But those guys are not going to shoot a bear in the park. Well, most of them wont.

Didn't think you were. I wasn't quite sure if it was real either.
