If you were to stage an AR, and over-penetration were not an issue in the location you were at, would you stage it with some form of premium ammo like Hornady Critical Defense, or just stick with regular old M193/855 or equivalent if they're all known to function 100% in the rifle in question?

Not quite the price of Hornady but mine are staged with 64gr Gold Dot Soft Points ... works of feral pigs so I think t would handle other “feral” types.

Well I just bought some Nosler Hp’s. I see no downside vs ball except for cost.

I’ve got a mag of 62gr Federal soft points in mine. I would feel fine with M193 though, it would probably penetrate fewer walls too.

64gr Nosler bonded. I don't need to penetrate a russian helmet at 400yds, but I've seen what these do to a whitetail at 75yds. Gold dots would be my next choice.

Hand loaded Hornady Vmax in one rifle. Soft points in the other. Lots of 855 on standby though

I only use M855 for range practice. My combat ammo is either Mk262 77gr OTM, M855A1 62 gr Ball or Mk318 OST. M855 has worked for me in Iraq but other three work far better in combat and more accurate.

Mk318...dang,money bags contractor over here lol

I’ve got an equivalent to Mk262 in my home rifle/mags and I’ve got M193 on stripper clips with speed loaders on hand if my loaded mags are expended

MK262 77gr OTM for me.

For those staging with regular ball, I gotta ask....why?

I have no problem with anyone who wants to stage with specialized defensive ammo. None at all. But for me personally I aim for reliability over all else. I have the money to go blast through hundreds of rounds of M855 or other standard ball, but I don’t have the cash to do the same with boutique specialty rounds.

My “stash” is a mix of cheap practice rounds and “military ball style” rounds. I can buy the former for very cheap and stack it deep, and I can by the later for not quite as cheap, and still stack it deep.

I have considered many times to settle on some standard defense specialty rounds, but have never “pulled the trigger” on it. I will add that this thread has me thinking of buying enough of some of these fancy types and shooting a hundred and loading a hundred. But I still think my long term “stashing” strategy will still rely on buying frugal and stacking high.

I got a few mags loaded with Hornady 55 S.P. ammo. I bought a bunch and loaded them to 3,000 ft/sec with no feeding problems in any of my ARs.

Federal M193 is whats in the rifle I keep around for home defense. I figure it is more than adequate for the job.

Always take the advice of a man whose targets shoot back at him.

262 and 318 are great no doubt. 193 will suffice. It's weight and projectile length allow it to stop easily in the body and release that internal damaging energy everyone loves so much. Also, fusion 62gr softpoints are what's loaded into my first magazine and I can either grab a mag of 193, a-max, or another of my 62 gr fusion mags if need be. I do have some 855 but not at the ready since im not expecting armored company. But you never know..

At home defense distances, I feel pretty confidant that M193 will still be travelling at close to a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps. That should take the bad intentions out of anybody, not to mention you can make that point 30 times

When I wore a badge, our issue ammo ammo for the department Mini-14s, or our personal M4 types, was 55 grain soft points.

For my personal go-to rifle(s) I'm sold on 62 grain (855 or it equivalents), 60 grain Hornady TAP, or Hornady Black 75 grain XTP.

But for my recent retro its 55 grain 193 or its equivalent, especially since it's got the old school 1 in 12 barrel, 55 grain slugs are NASTY out of barrels with that twist rate....

My ammo fort is made of mostly 55gr(Wolf SP and FMJ, XM-193), but I do have 855 as well. The best thing for me to do is look at the first round in the mag as I never know whats going to be there.
