Watched the premiere back to back episodes...(I pay the $10 fee so my wife can watch Y&R)...was not overly impressed; the story is there, the acting is not...it seemed forced, if that makes sense. CBS apparently has rights to all the different Trek series, even the animated from the 70s, and they are all available (every episode) with the subscription...my grandson is about half-way through the original series.

Now I'm as big of a Trek fan as they come, but I'm not shelling out $10 per month to watch it via the CBS streaming service. They need to get a clue that they're not HBO.
My sentiments exactly. I wasn't impressed by Star Trek Discovery. The characters seemed wooden. No, not wooden even, more like cardboard with a fake wood grain printed on. I'll watch "The Orville" instead.

I was reading on the Arstechnica links that they think a lot of the "wooden" acting stemmed from the director, who is supposedly good, but this wasn't his area of expertise. They said that the second episode was better and that they think actor chemistry will ultimately prevail. The big thing they liked about the series is that it departs from the idealistic view that ST always had, which I think was s Roddenberry requirement.

So they are holding true to the original series then? Who? ...(dramatic pause) watches Star Trek... (dramatic pause with grimace) for the acting?!?!!!11

I was going to watch it (had it DVR’d). But it must have came on late and some special with Oprah was on so I didn’t even watch it.

We have first (and I guess second) episode on the DVR as well. After seeing your post I went to check, and the first 15-20 minutes are definitely some Oprah hosted idiocy.

And I didn't realize until this thread that it would cost me cash to watch the show. But, that also explains why it says it's on at 8:30p, but the DTV guide (and CBS.com) both list a different show in that time slot.

Guess I'll just check Kodi at some point. Never watched any of the other ST series, but the wife wants to watch this one. In the meantime, The Orville is definitely filling the SciFi void.

Watch the Orville on fox.

Yeah it has been pretty decent. I went into it with low expectations and it has been good so far. I think it's been a decent mix of comedy and some Star Trek. Seth hasn't taken himself too seriously or tried to turn it into "Family Guy in Space".

That’s exactly how I went into it as well. More like it was the only new show on and I wasn’t watching the NFL.

Yeah it replaced Sunday night football for one weekend and then Thursday night football for the last 2!

Got me!

This is how I see Star Trek...

...and The Orville staring Seth MacFarland...

Both good but for different reasons! :D

I also don't have trouble with liking Trek and Wars which is blasphemy to 99.9% of the nerd world...

And yes, if you can interpret that then welcome to your reality...nerd!

I want to see it just because I like Star trek. But I don't have the at the house just Netflix through my phone.

Can't justify $10.00 /month, that s just stupid. If I could watch the pirated versions I would check that out, though ;)

There is open source software called Kodi. You load it on your computer and watch just about anything including recently released movies. They are sometimes still showing in the theaters when they become available online. Installation of "packages" can be somewhat convoluted but there are plenty of helpful DIY videos on Youtube.

Anyhow, I know someone who is watching Star Trek Discovery (all of season one that has been broadcast so far is available) on their laptop using this software. If you have a "hacked" Amazon Firestick I think you can access these shows through it too. I don't know all the legalities but had heard that since we are not downloading the show/program and are not actually possessing it, we are just viewing what is out on the internet, that it is not illegal to do. I am not a lawyer, your mileage may vary, etc.

I'm all about anything Star Trek, being a life-long trekkie from the get-go.

HOWEVER...I'm not paying yet MORE money every month to the entertainment scalping industry just so I can watch the new series.

I'll wait until it comes out on DVD. Or Netflix.

In order to be a bigger fan than me you would need to dress up and go to the conventions, but I too refuse to pay for a streaming service to watch it.

I might have to check out this Kodi. As much as I hear the show is being "pirated" I think a lot of people are making their disposition clear.

Why?! Why must everyone be gay now?

And what's with the f-bombs? Does everything really need to step on toes and push boundaries? It tends to get old these days.

I think it's a reflex over reaction after having been constrained for so long.

I watched the first 2 episodes of ST discovery, and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I don't like how they've changed the Klingons again.

Watch the Orville on fox.
This show is more Star Trek than "STD".

I don't like ST Discovery. For one thing, it's lost all the optimism of the previous series. I don't want grimdark space sci-fi; I could get that from several other shows. Even in the Dominion war arc in DS9, there were respites from the drama. This series seems like it was created by someone who wants to compete with cable series like Game of Thrones, and that's just not what Star Trek is.

I don't like the fact that there's a protagonist either. When you're following a crew instead of one character, it opens up a lot of possibilities for story telling. I was bored with this Michael chick after the second episode.

I couldn't agree more. I want to like it so much, but they're making it very difficult. All the dark, brooding edginess is old and over played. I'm going to keep watching it though in the hopes that it gets better. I've seen every single episode of Start Trek that's out there (including the animated series) so I plan on watching this too. I mean, if I can make it through seven seasons of Voyager, I should be able to get through Discovery, right?
