Starlink internet

I signed up for the beta but they wanted $500 for the equipment and $100/month for service with no guarantee. I passed on it.

Any idea what his ping is?

That was my biggest problem with the T-Mobile Internet. Speed was great, but ping times were terrible.

It’ll likely test at 50-110mbps down with a 90+ms latency.

Has a new offering, think it’s $2,500 up front and $500 per month. Supposed to be higher speed, but same latency.

Ultimately the economics don’t seem to work, and he’s not launching satellites fast enough (if that’s even possible). My understanding is that he’s trying to sell it but who knows.

@easternnc4me the issue isn’t that he’s using wifi for the test, he needs to test either from his router to the internet or use something like the ookla website to test end-to-end. We know the sat link will be the slowest part of his connection, so should get the same result from either test. Since he may not have full access to his router the ookla approach will probably be easier.

I’ve been waiting for over a year! It was supposed to be last fall, guess what!? Covid! Now this fall or next spring or when the hell ever! The ONLY thing I can get where I’m at is Hughesnet, and it sucks azz on its best day! Last month, my 3 ye old grandson ran out our bandwidth in 4 days! 4 DAYS!

Same here. Still having to send up smoke signals with DSL. They say mid 2022. Maybe fiber will get here first!

Where is your BIL located? I have been on the wait list for a year now and bumped out to mid 2022 after an initial promise of mid 2021. I understand they release by region...so maybe ill see mine sooner than later. Im down for the cost...as i have absolutely no reasonable options where i live...centurylink with 6up and 3 down....and they barely even get that.

If any of you have great 4glte or 5g ATT or Verizon service Ive got a guy that leases unlimited data lines. Ive used him for over 6 years now and its not much more than starlink.

I would be interested but our 4glte and 5g signal is extremely weak at the house as well...1 bar...maybe 2 on a good day. I called verizon....they said cur down your trees and youll have a great signal.

Any chance it would work with 2 bars

They have external antennas you can place on your roof or outside of your house. Goto speedof.me on your phone and off wifi. This will show what speeds you can expect.

also I'm in the woods but I get 2 bars without my antenna and 4 bars with. I range from 20-90mb down

What kind of antenna do you have and is it affixed to the house, pole, tree, etc.?

It’s actually not fixed to a pole at all. I have it near the edge of the house. I’m sure it would provide better speeds if I were to put it outside.

We install antenna very similar to these under the eaves of houses. Sometimes put them on the side of a chimney.

Really doesn’t make sense to put them on a tall pole, the lightning eats them and it fries your router and whatever else you have physically connected, Where we have done it we put a wireless router in an outdoor cabinet so nothing connects to the house.

The cellular signals are non-line-of-sight, but it still helps to cut a path through the trees to your nearest tower and point the antenna at it.

Which is why I specifically told him to use Ookla when I texted him this morning. Also told him to test on fast.com. He said he'll do it tonight when he gets home from work.

Outside of Macclesfield in Edgecombe County. He signed up last year.

I have had AT&T as a back up internet for a while now. Getting around 60-80 down. Had it changed from post-paid to pre-paid (might have that backwards) and it cost $23/month. Before changing it was $34.99/month. Actually have 2 services. My sister uses the other as a backup. AT&T has had some plan changes since then. Verizon is/has come out with the home internet like T-Mobile. Might be worth looking into for some. If you are a heavy gamer is will not be for you. Want to stream and watch Youtube? Sure. I had 2 T-Mobile home internet services. One for my mom and one for my brother. Works fine for what they do (Youtube, stream). Mom sold her house so I cancelled hers and sent it back. My brother is getting around 15Mbps down. Friend who lives closer to the tower gets around 55. They don't game. Just stream. Works fine for them since they have no other alternative. Some people are using Visible as a home internet. Anyone looking better internet will just have to figure what works best for their needs.

That’s one of the best latency results I’ve seen for starlink.
