Stocked the farm pond today.
Pond is .6 acres total surface area. 7.5' deep at deepest point.

25 Large mouth bass 3"
25 channel cats 4"-6"
2 - 10" grass carp
2 lbs of minnows

Now I need to evict the 20lb snapping turtle before he eats all my new residents.
I walked the edge today with shelaylee in hand but he would not show himself.
Heavy rains for the past three days have the pond level at the highest I've ever seen it.
Hopefully the water clears up when things settle back down.

Gotcha a milk jug, tape the lid on. Tie a piece of mason twine to the handle about 3ft long. Little short section of steel leader, big ass hook. Put a bull frog on it or a piece of stew meat. Most times he'll be near the bank in the morning al you gotta do is go get em.

@thrillhill will eat them btw

This or just tie the line to a limb.Depending on the shot a high velocity rifle round will spin the shells like Mario Bros. i allways liked rotted chicken for bait.

Damn, want are y'all huntin, alligators!?

I'm going to be set up tomorrow to do some turtle target practice. I got 3 so far, killed 5 last year the same way. The hooks work great, but not as much fun.20150723_162721.jpg

So, I take it dumping a couple pregnant snapping turtles in the pond would just about p*ss you off?

Build a floating box with ramps on both sides. The top should be spring loaded so when the turtle climbs up there to sun he'll fall right in and be trapped.

Something like this

I've made them from scratch before.

I think my pond is over populated. All the bass I catch are about the same size. 10-12 inches long. There are a few bigger ones. I haven't caught a cat in years but they are big and I've just not gotten any lately.

Logically I know this is stupid but I am terrified to my very bones of snapping turtles. When I was four years old some older kids in the neighborhood caught one and chased me around the yard with it. It has been shoot on site since that day.

Sounds like time for a fish fry. Chuck the ones you don't keep on the side of the pond to feed the foxes.

Water clarity (LMB are sight hunters),
Water PH & available forage all come into play when it comes to bass growth.
Each bass requires 7lbs of forage per year to add 1lb of weight.
You should check the PH of your pond.
Most NC farm ponds need lime.
You cannot over lime using ag lime.
You are liming the pond bottom, not the water. No need to mix it, just broadcast it.

Ideally, the PH is 7.5-8.5.
Fish blood is 7.3.

Worry about the water quality first.

Not from be I would like to have that monster 10lb bass hit my line though. The last Cat I saw was about 3 1/2 foot long and that's been 4-5 years ago. I'm not a cat fisher so I wouldn't begin to know how to catch on besides a worm.

Big or small blue gill and how do you hook them for bait fishing? I've got tons of blue gill and brim in my pond.
I like to hook 'em right behind the dorsal. Kinda makes them swim a bit "off" and I think that the bass/stripers/flatheads like to see one with a gimp.

I hook them under the dorsal fin, under the spine. Ideally, they sit in one spot doing the death wobble. It's the dinner bell for predator fish.

When you see your bobber doing the slow death wobble, it won't be long.
Use a large hook if you want to throw the target fish back. Set the hook after a 3-4 count. Otherwise they swallow the hook.

True. My experience with catfish (the kind with gills) is that 90% of the time they are gut hooked. Frustrating as I don't eat'em. I end up cutting the line and hoping the hook will rust fast without killing them.

We moved into out new house Wednesday, took a minute to stick a line in the pond last night and among all the breem'ish worm wasters I got a few of these from out in the middle.. I am looking forward to finding the time to fish it a little deeper and a little bigger to see what we got..

@thrillhill is enroute with a knife and a smile

UUgghh. Yeah. Got 4 to clean in the morning. Two of them are the biggest I've ever done.

Normally we only do one or two a year. But, I got a buddy trying to eradicate them from a pond so he can have fish and ducks and whatnot. He has been catching them off and on for several weeks now. This batch here, we've been "cleaning them out" for three weeks so they taste better.

Tomorrow is gonna be a long day. But, we'll eat good for a couple weeks!

@Slacker , if you catch some out and want to eat them just hit me up. But you probably know what you are doing there anyway.

I attempted relocation but it resisted.
It's possum food.
