Stolen Valor.

Gah! I HATED those windbreakers. Looked like something a 75 year old Granny / mall walker would wear. Fortunately most of the units I served with ditched them and we had unit sweatshirts (not hoodies). Seriously-- I wanted to burn that oversized trash bag with a zipper... Wearing that thing for a conditioning foot march was terrible. Wearing that thing going through an obstacle course? No-fecking-way.

Sorry man, other than the dumb-f-u-c-k-ing black beret fiasco, that was the worst uniform item the Army issued, in my opinion.

We never got to do rucks or obstacle courses in PTs. Always BDUs & boots, add ruck & dome of obedience as necessary. The new PTs were way better for PT, IMO. We PT'd in the cold & the wet & they beat the hell out of having 30lbs of wet cotton sweats trying to fall off & blocking zero wind.

Don't get me started on the beret. Hated that piece of headgear. I got no dog in the fight, but thought it was shitty for Shalikashvili to take the Rangers' beret from 'em. Had the misfortune of wearing a red one for half my career. Absolutely worthless headgear. It might look pretty in your A's, but it was hot in the summer & didn't keep the sun out of yer eyes, provided zero warmth in the winter & smelled like a dead sheep when it got wet.

I know a guy that wears a Vietnam Vet hat, but he is so clearly not a Vietnam Vet (under 30yo) that it never bothered me, nor would he ever claim he was.

Did the guy outright say he was a Vet?

I haven’t heard the “dome of obedience” in a while. I remember getting punished with it as a platoon for so long, we all got the monk ring of missing hair from the damn suspension system. Patrol cap was nonexistent; Kevlar/K-pot was the only headgear we were allowed to wear.

And yes the beret fiasco was the biggest screw up of all army uniform screw ups

Hated the damn K-pot & the new gel padding sucked balls in the winter. Missed the steel pot. At least you could sit on it or cook/wash/shave in it.

Then why wear the hat?

Hey, If I wear my girlfriends "ARMY MOM" T shirts, is that considered stolen valor or just homo?

That would be cultural appropriation of the service mom culture. :D

I would never pretend to be part of the military. It would be embarrassing to have the other person thinking “my god you’ve gotten fat”.

My boonie cap and pt shirts are great for yard work. My boots are still holding strong and I wear them on the motorcycle. But I don't wear any veteran clothing, have the licence plate or any decals on the truck. However, I gladly take the 10% discount at Home Depot and Lowes. Saved me a bunch when I bought the washer & dryer.

I still have a bunch of stuff. I have cammies (woodland and digital), a bunch of covers, a couple boonies, my pea coat, my field jacket, my gore-tex shell and pants, my foul-weather deck jacket, a few pairs of boots and dress shoes, some PT gear/t-shorts/sweats. My khaki shirt still has my collar insignia and ribbons, hung up from the last day I wore it.

I have grandiose ideas about using some of it for this and that, but I don't. I should just box most of it for goodwill or something.

Yeah, I dig my Lowes discount. I use the crap out of it.

I have a lot of gear that I bought mainly for hiking/camping and some clothes that was given to me from my parents (father served in USMC). I don't usually wear the stuff out in town, it's so old now that I typically just use it to work in the yard.

The ILBE that I bought is great though. Tough as nails and I like the USMC woodland digital pattern. It's produced by Arc'teryx, and they make some of the best outdoor equipment around.

I do often get asked when I served, mainly because I'm a twin and my brother also served in the USMC.

It's a great pack and I will eventually pick one up. I hear you about Arc'teryx; I am a gear whore, and I love their jackets. When a friend of mine retired from the Navy he went to work for Arc'teryx, testing their LEAF line. Lucky bastard.

I have one of their Fission SV insulated coats. When I bought it, I was unsure how something so lightweight could be one of their warmest coats.

I had previous experience with North Face down and synthetic fill coats, all of which were much heavier and thicker; so I was incredibly skeptical about the size of the coat.

It is by far the hottest damn thing I have ever worn. I'm typically warm natured, so it has to be incredibly cold for me to want a warm coat. I don't break that jacket out for anything over 35F. It is nice not having a super heavy and bulky coat on in the winter.

Next month I turn 50, so I am getting an Atom LT for general fall/winter/early spring wear. I do not do technical stuff anymore so I don't need the heavy stuff. I love the Alpha, but do not love the Alpha prices.

They're very proud of their stuff for sure. I've had motorcycle jackets that were pretty pricey, but they had more to them than these.

I'm outside a lot for work, as I have to travel between a number of the buildings on our site, so that's how I justified having made that purchase.
