Hey, anyone ever had a toilet with an intermittent stuck valve, slowly overfilling every now and then, when it's already full? Sometimes, I would catch it running, and while I was looking at it, it stopped.

Well, I was gonna replace the whole shootin' match, when the handle broke, lifter snapped right off. So, I bought a new handle and installed it while I was researchin' what was the best and simplest Whole Shootin' Match Toilet Rebuild Kit.

Whatdya know, the valve stops at full and doesn't leak any more! Didn't need anything but a handle. Go figure?

I had one do that. The old metal handle was corroded inside the sleeve that goes through the porcelain.

Scratched my head over that one for a couple weeks

That's odd. The handle isn't connected to the fill valve (at least, not in any toilet I have ever seen). It only operates the flush valve (flapper), and the fill valve is closed by a float. How did your broken handle cause the fill valve to stick? Was yours leaking water through the flush valve, or through the overflow tube? If the latter, you may still need to replace the fill valve.

On mine if it stuck in just the right spot it was aslo loose enough in the through grommet it would touch the float that slid up and down to make it overflow

I dunno if that's what mine was doin', but it musta been... or, it will do it again someday. We'll see!

Anyway, it hasn't done it for a few days, since replacing the handle.

I think you'll need to replace the flapper and the fill valve. Takes 5 minutes. Might as well get to it now.

I previously used Korky rebuilds with the internal float/valve and they were always solid...until the last two that I did. Had problems with both and couldn’t get them adjusted/fixed. I switched over to the fluid master with the external float and have been much happier. Rebuilt two a few months ago with those and have one kit sitting in the kids bathroom that was probably gonna do today.

Fluidmaster uses a small disc seal under $3 to repair their fill valves.

Has the water pressure in your area changed recently? Increase in pressure can cause issues in older valves.

I'll second the suggestion for Fluidmaster. I have used them for years with no real problems. I did replace the disc in one of them, very quick and easy.
