Heard a noise from my samsung fridge a few days ago. Do what all of us do and hope it goes away. This morning it was louder so not I have to do something. I work in food service and have heard the sound a fan makes while hitting ice so figured that was the issue. Looked up on youtube to see if this was something I could do.
Figured I would attempt it and about 55 minutes I had taken food, drawers and backplate off and melted the ice with a hairdryer and put it all back together. took about 35 minutes to cool back down to 35 from 80.
Sitting back at the table basking in my accomplishment my mother calls me and says that her Samsung refrigerator is making a loud noise. So not only did I fix mine but then had to go over and do the same exact thing for hers. What is the chances that could ever happen?
my luck I guess. Figure I saved us at least $400 combined.

And now I know who to call if I ever get a Samsung refrigerator...

Seriously though - what "luck!" Were yours & hers bought same area/time frame?
About 6 month apart and basically the same model. The ice machines on them are notorious for getting jammed up and needing defrosting. Been doing that to both Of them for years.

I got a 15 year old ge fridge that did the same. Replaced the ‘heat lamp’ defroster thingy, don’t remember what its called, but going great since. Took 30 minutes to fix.

Ha. We had to do ours about every month. What a PITA. We solved it by getting rid of that POS.

I like the fridge but I don’t think I would ever get another Samsung.

We have all Samsung appliances in the mountains. The ice maker stopped working after about 5 years. The dryer is broken. It hardly ever gets used. I need to fix that still. And the microwave gets effected by steam from cooking. It can randomly turn its fan on and off.

But they do make excellent TV’s.

I own two new refrigerators in two new houses, and have done that to both of them, as well as the ten year old GE Profile I owned in the last house five years ago. All three GE.

I posted here about this a year or so ago, and the takeaways I got are to highly avoid putting anything in the fridge that hasn’t cooled completely down, and also that going in and out of the fridge a lot can also cause it to ice up as well.

Make sure the ice maker is totally defrosted. Even a small piece of ice in the back will stop it at times. That might bring her back to life. Or if you already did that it’s prob broke. 😂

One thing I learned about ice makers is if you don’t use them often the water line into the back can freeze up and cause it to not work.

The thing is when I go to the mountains I really don’t want to spend time messing with Samsung issues. I’ve just been buying a bag of ice on the way. I can be excellent at procrastination. 😆

You mean not using any ice for weeks at a time is not good. Guess I’m screwed.
I think this could be a problem. I used to never use my ice maker at the last house and it became a constant problem.

It didn’t have a shut off because it was installed with one of those saddle connectors that pierce the water line, long after the house was built.

Then it would piddle on the floor behind the fridge.

You can add an in line shutoff valve to the water line behind the fridge.

If you take the freezer panels off always, always blow out the drain in the pan under the coil. Water will back up and be pulled back to the coil to freeze again.

@Amps 13 I was reading about someone having this problem on either arfcom or garage journal the other day, they mentioned there is a low voltage heater kit that someone makes to keep that from happening. Might be worth a look.

No signs of water leaking yet, but we do shut off the water when we leave. I’m going to pull the fridge out, check things out and mess with it next time up there. I might even defrost and fix it If I get a good rainy day.

If this is an issue again I will definitely be using this info for sure. Ty.

I had the same issue with the fan hitting ice sound. I just let it go until the noise stopped. 🙄

Turns out that’s when the fan stopped (fridge side), and nothing cooled anymore. Took everything out like you did and removed the ice buildup.

Haven’t had an issue with the ice maker not making ice. But I do have to dump all the ice out every couple months due to a horrible squeaking noise. The powdery ice debris gets up under the plastic piece that’s on the hook/stirred in the ice bucket and makes and awful racket spinning against the plastic bucket. Dump the ice into a bowl, run the bucket under hot water and spin the hook my hand until it quietly breaks free, then put the ice back in. Doesn’t cost anything and don’t even lose the ice…it’s just annoying.

The ice maker stopped working
If you defrost and the ice maker starts to work again but then stops after a couple of days you'll need to replace part # DA97-00209Z. Check for your specific model part number.

Easy to replace from the back of the fridge, 30min max.
