suggestions for a 22 LR rifle that runs well

10/22 should run fine - most do. Try CCI mini mags. If those don't work, there is something wrong with yours. If it works with high velocity (most are 1200+ fps), but not subsonic (under 1100fps) then use high velocity :)

But M&P 15-22 is pretty much the most reliable semi auto 22LR.

2 of the best Semi auto 22s are the S&W 15-22 and the Ruger 10/22.
If you have issues with either one of those , your rifle could need cleaned / lubed. Mags need to be good quality mags and above all else not all 22 ammo works in semi autos. Most semi autos have ammo they like and ammo they do not like to cycle.
I have a 15-22 with a ridiculously high round count, the only thing I have ever changed is the extractor

I have a nice 10/22 but it has never been too reliable. What are some other makes that actually run well? And don't break the bank?
If your 10/22 doesn’t run good, I’d bet you have a faulty mag or bad/cheap ammo. Try a different mag and CCI Mini-Mags. If this doesn’t make it run like it should, call Ruger. Are the bullets you are using lead? Always use plated bullets in an auto, pistol or rifle and save lead for revolvers.

My most-shot firearm is my Smith & Wesson 15-22 (second place being my S&W Victory 22lr pistol I shoot in conjunction with it), set up to be a fairly faithful copy of my primary 5.56 AR. :) To fill your criteria, I would recommend a S&W 15-22 sport (the mlok one), upgraded with the TandemKross extractor and firing pin kit here: https://www.tandemkross.com/essential_maintenance_kit-sw-mp-15_22

In my experience, the 15-22 doesn't have 100% reliability firing or extracting with the OEM extractor and firing pin (It's like 98% there but when you're firing as much as I do through this gun, that's a noticeable rate), but the TK pieces are machined a bit more precisely and make the gun run like a Swiss watch. As long as you clean the gun regularly (I run the gun until it gets so filthy it won't cycle reliably anymore, that's when I know it's time to clean it), with that setup it should be awesomely reliable and makes for great, cheap practice. Also make sure you keep an eye on the ejector - just keep it snug and angled where its position doesn't impede the cycling of the bolt. I find my 15-22 absolutely loves Federal Auto Match, Federal blue box bulk, Aguila copper plated, and CCI Mini-Mags - that is absolutely why I specify those are the brands of 22lr I'll accept in BST trades. It will cycle lower velocity stuff, but might be a bit sluggish by comparison, especially as it starts to get dirty.

That with your choice of red dot, and either a LaRue MBT-2S or Geissele trigger, and you'll have a lightweight, fun, cheap, and reliable little carbine to train, hunt, plink and compete with to your heart's content. I 100% recommend it, as my 15-22 is one of those guns I *always* take to the range.

The only 10/22s that I’ve had issues with were ones that I had built for competition guns. Sometimes those needed some tweaking or preferred specific ammo like CCI MiniMags.

The first place I would start with a 10/22 is magazines. That seemed to be the majority of my issues with my competition guns.

But my factory plinking/hunting rifles have all ran fine out the box with a large variety of ammo.

And like above, my S&W M&P 15-22s have ran great. Only time I’ve had issues with them, again, me tinkering with them making them into competition guns.

@Gnash.Hyena is right about some tandemkross upgrades. They really have nice extractors, firing pins, springs, and etc.

How about you explain a little more on “never been too reliable”…what are the problems/symptoms?

One thing I noticed with my 10/22 is that I can cause feed issues by putting pressure on the mag. Mags that extend beyond the stock make that much much worse.

10-22 is a fairly simple machine. Extractor, mags , ammo all easily varied to isolate problems. Make sure it is clean and lubed.
Had a guy at a Rimfire Match whose gun wouldn't run. He said it ran fine the day before while practicing and he cleaned it afterward. He had gorilla tightened the action screw and after backing it out about 1/8 turn gun ran fine.

You have a stock 10/22 that’s not reliable with any kind of ammo you have tried? I have a hard time believing that. If you just want another 22 you don’t have to tell us tall tales to justify it.

All kidding aside I am puzzled about your 10/22. I have seen many 10/22s that had all kinds of aftermarket parts on them that were not reliable but I have not seen a stock 10/22 that didn’t run great. Not saying there are none out there but you have a rare one if what you say is true.

Most of the time I'd say cleaning it well, lubing it and giving it a try with a factory 10 round rotary mag would do the trick.

I have seen several of the run very poorly with bentz chambered bull barrels.

Strongly recommend fixing the 10/22 AND buying a 15-22. Can't go wrong.

So I have one of these:

What happens is a have a good bit of failures to eject or feed when using the 25 round factory Ruger mags it's meant to be using. I mostly use copper plated Aguila high velocity ammo which should have enough kick to keep things moving. I have tagged mags whenever I had issues but have not been able to pinpoint any "problem mags". I had a 10/22 once before and that one also did not really run reliably until it had more than 2K rounds through it. Does that help any?

Oh that’s funny you show that model. I had the tactical one as well. Malfunctioned constantly drove me crazy. I had all but given up on it and put in the closet. Got a wild hair one day. Put a used wood stock on and set out to fix it. Ran like a Swiss watch. I have no idea how or why the tactical stock mess caused it but it ran great in another stock

If your interested in fiddling with it I would consider buying and installing this.

Try it with the factory 10rd rotary mag.

As mentioned above the stock could be a turd too. On the 10/22 half of the magazine well is the stock. If that cheesy stock makes the magazine too loose of a fit that may be your problem.

This. Try a different 10 rounder. They're the highest art of that whole rifle.

I have heard of people using those extended mags as a forward grip. This can cause misalignment between feed lips and chamber. Does the rifle run with 10 rnd mags ?

Anyone have an opinion on Right to Bear dedicated 22lr uppers? I have been looking into these but it seems like finding quality 22lr mags is difficult. I know there are a few options out there but seem to have bad reviews.
