Looking for a rifle vise to steady a rifle while working on it (mounting scopes).

Anybody using clamps for a vise?

Any suggestions?

Depends on the rifle.

For AR’s they make one that is basically a solid plastic magazine that holds it in the perfect position

I love this thing. Sturdy, well thought out. Holds AR's sans mag no problem. Simple clamp works great and holds guns tight.
I shopped all the Tipton vises, as well as conventional vises like the hi-dollar Bessey stuff. I'm real happy with this one and Amazon has them for $30.

Full disclosure- MTM case-gard is one of my favorite accessory company's. I've yet to get anything from them that was junk, all made in America, pro 2A company.

I have the block for the ARs that fit into the bench vise and into the receiver. I am looking for something to mount scopes on bolt action rifles. I have a Caldwell rest that does not hold the gun steady. It OK for cleaning a gun but to work on a gun, not so good.

I bought a lapping tool to help get the rings square. I have been having problems with a couple of rifles. This is what prompt me looking for a rifle vise.

That should do it. I prefer to use my rotating bench vise with a set of aluminum or rubber faced jaws holing the barrel and butt stock resting on the work bench. You have to be a little more careful placing the rifle in the vise jaws, but once you do it is rock solid. And the vise comes in handy for so many uses.
