Going to be picking up this Remington 1100 in 12 gauge tomorrow. Will have better pictures once I do.

Thinking of going two ways with this one but wanted your advice. Refinish it to semi original condition or made it into an HD shotgun with extended mag tube.

If I were to restore it to original I would strip down the stock and forearm and refinish. With the pitting on the receiver I’m not sure I can get that out so think about have it duracoated.

If it’s to be made into an HD gun can I cut the barrel down, install mag tube and expect it to be reliable? I read somewhere a while back that the different barrel lengths had different size gas holes. Will have to do some more research there.

Thoughts? Keep in mind I already have a 1187 in field condition with 26” barrel

Unless there is something new out, stripping the finish off the stock is a bear of a job. I started refinishing one a long while ago and figured I'd just put on some stripper and the finish would come right off. I was wrong. Kutzit and several other brands I tried wouldn't do a thing. There is probably something out now that will work or you can always just do it the old fashion way with sandpaper. I'm too damn lazy. If stripper won't take a finish off, I figure it was meant to stay. I don't think there is any problem cutting the barrel down. I had a 30 inch magnum cut down to 24" and screw in choke installed. I used to carry one deer hunting loaded with 7+1 rounds of 3" Mag Buckshot. Finally got a tube that would pattern. Shot better at 40 yards than it did from the factory with a 30" full choke. I think I would up using a tube designated as turkey choke. Long time ago but it would pattern Winchester Super X buckshot really tight

For removing that finish I'd recommend the soft dremel abrasive wheel. I had a custom gun that had a clear finish that had clouded over and no chemical would touch it. Mechanical abrasion was the only way and these little things worked beautifully!

As for turning it into a shorter barreled home defense gun...it may actually be cheaper just to buy a shorter barrel than cut and thread for chokes the old one. A little Google-Fu turned up these guys, I've never used this vendor, but it might be worth the call:

Bump, just curious as to what you ended up doing with it?

I’ll post some pictures tomorrow. A little OOOO steel wool cleaned up the rust. The wood is actually in better shape than the pictures so. For sure a “truck” gun but it does not need to be stripped and refinished.

As of now it’s a single shot. I’ve got to take it apart and see what’s going on. It does not seem to want to feed the next shell from the mag tube.

Might check the rubber O-ring gas seals.

That and thoroughly clean and lubricate the gas system. I've seen them so rusty and gunky internally that it was hard to get the barrel off and they still sorta cycled, but not really. :).
