I've got this little rifle set up for my son. It's a basic Crickett .22lr that has been threaded, with a Gemtech Outback II. After shooting a few hundred rounds through my CZ452 yesterday we broke out his Crickett to practice with. First shot with CCI CB Shorts was freaking loud. I decided we needed to use ears when shooting so we put them on. Something is going on if ears are needed when shooting suppressed with CB Shorts.

I noticed some smoke when my boy was shooting and broke out the phone to get it on camera. Am I thinking correctly in that if smoke is sneaking out around the bolt that noise is too? Any fixes for something like this? Can I use something like JB weld and seal up the leaks? lol. If no fixes I'll get one of my other CZ rifles cut down for him to use or break out the Contender SBR.

What was the second shot like? There's always a first round pop, with subsequent rounds being quieter. Heck CB shorts without a can aren't loud!

I shoot CCI CB shorts regularly and they are about as loud as a pellet rifle. I have never needed ear protection with them.

Did you try it with any other subsonic ammo?

Follow up shots were loud too. It's a single shot rifle so it takes a little bit to load the round but smoke is usually still pouring out of the chamber by the time we get it loaded. 3 seconds is a fast reload for us with this rifle!

EDIT: I'll try it without can tomorrow and see how it does.

On advice from a guy on ARFCOM, I tried some normal SV LR ammo through it and it went silent again. I guess the chamber on this rifle doesn't like that short ammo.

That's a little bizarre.

My son's pump Taurus hates CBs/shorts and I have to hand load the buggers.

Super Colibris are insanely quiet without a can and they're full length. Maybe try them? Wouldn't shoot through a suppressor though, they're primer only no powder.

Fyi on the Taurus pump shooting CB shorts- there is a fairly simple fix that will allow them to feed. IIRC, it uses a pencil eraser. Non permanent.
Google will probably find it.

My nephew's Cricket shoots these insanely quiet without a can and they're great for teaching with. They're just a super BB .
