Survival Food Review: Expired Can Food - Part 1: Corned Beef!

We decided to answer the question of how long grocery store canned food will last in your food storage. I took several cans of different type foods from my personal storage that are at least 10 years past their stated expiration date. We will taste them and see how they held up.

Bottom line: The fat had risen to the surface some and it was just a little dry. It smelled fine and tasted like canned corned beef.

No ill effects of any kind.

Opened 8 cans (pop top) of Del Monte pears dated 2015 and they showed no signs of external badness. Until, I opened them and 4 of them were black and stonky. just an FYI. Now feeding the rest of them to the chimkens.

I've seen some old off-brand green beans that my dad bought circa Y2K rust out and rupture. They tasted bad fresh. Canned chicken that I've had a few years out of date picked up a bit of a metallic taste from the can, but was otherwise edible. Nothing a little hot sauce couldn't fix. I've had canned milk that was quite a few years out of date. While it didn't make me sick, it smelled and tasted very metallic, so after sampling it, I gave it to the dogs.

Never tried any pears or peaches that were more than 1-2 years old, but I'm surprised they'd turned black. Might be because its a low acid fruit, or it may have been canned without preservatives?

Last week I had a pop tart from 2008. It tasted exactly the same as a new one.

Yep, fruit and pop tops, not a good combination for storage.

Recently I purchased a couple of pails of freeze dried meals to supplement buckets of rice/beans, etc. I put together years ago. I noticed that they are almost all carbs, mostly rice and some beans and veggies but very little meat. So to supplement I filled two 5 gallon buckets with various canned meats. Fish, ham, spam, corned beef, roast beef, and I can't remember what else, but some of everything you see on the store shelves. No chicken 'cause my significant other is allergic to commercial chicken, probably the hormones or antibiotics they inject them with.

II had a hard time finding solid top cans in a variety of meats, so some of them are pop tops. I hope that works out. I threw in a handful of dessicant packs and sealed the buckets. One of them I placed a Bluetooth temp/humidity monitor in. They are sitting in my non climate controlled basement and maintaining 50-60° and < 25% humidity. We'll see how that holds up through the summer.
