Survival Tins

I have not watched it yet but wanted to let everyone know that I have found some giftcard tins that easily fit in a pocket but have about 50% more space. found them at big lots and old time pottery for about 2$ ea

Go to dollar tree and craft stores and often find them for a buck.
OR
get some altoids for about a buck fifty, use the mints or toss them and you have a nice, hinged tin.

I have acquired many tins over the years and started putting together some different ones.
But mine have been for specific things to go in my GHB (ie, one is sewing items, has come in handy more than a few times when a button pops off etc, one has some firestarting items in it etc)

I'll watch the video later when I have time and post up pics of what I have when I can. Good thread though

The video is about doing a larger tin and not the smaller Altoids type tins. IMO the Altoid size tins are very limited but like HMP said are good for single kits like a fishing kit, sewing, kit, etc.

There are very few things that a big tin of chocolate chip cookies can't fix, but I'll watch the video later tonight to see what other ideas I can pick up.

I like the bigger tin to make a multi purpose tin. First aid, firestarter, fishhook 's and line, ducttape, twine, candy, sunscreen, multitool, water purification tabs, flashlight...

Then I think you will like the video. :)

If you can find the old Golden Virginia tobacco tins, they make Altoids tins look like paper. Much sturdier, almost twice as much room inside but still very pocketable.

Not sure they sold it in the tin here, in the UK it used to be everywhere.

So Im wanting to put together a SMALL kit to keep in my pocket for some upcoming trips I'll be taking.
Example: I'll be going back to DC with my school, we're not supposed to have any bags or anything with us during the day and often are away from bus for, pretty much, the entire day.

So I dug up an old Altoids tin from a storage tote with my 'edc' stuff and am wanting to put together a small kit that I can keep with me on the trip.
I'll be going to various places, and Im treating this like the TSA: No knives, no firestarting.

Ideas?
Of course I'll do a small, basic FAK...really just a few bandaids and neosporane etc
But Im thinking of what else I might want to pack in it.
Sewing kit?

Ive done ______-specific tins before (like a firestarting tin, a sewing tin etc),but never an all-around one

I know what it's like to be with kids all of the time, they're always breaking something, getting cut etc - they love to come to Mr. O for help, knowing I have 'tools' (Style PS) that can help them.

Just looking for ideas.
Been spending the past two days messing with the tin, trying to wear the finish out a bit - lots of just rubbing it, sliding it across my desk etc

So the ladies will not have purses? I find that hard to believe, but nonetheless, I would add an alcohol wipe and a small set of tweezers and a small magnifying glass.

Correct, even ladies are told to not bring bags along.
With 40+ of us, if each person, or HALF, had a bag check it would mess up the schedule, so no, no bags throughout the day.

I already added some wetwipes to the tin.
mini sharpie for writing (on anything, vs pen or pencil)
bandaids

good call on the tweezers!

My kit, which I carried when I was with the Marines and was in an aircrew, was in a rectangular camping pot similar to this:

http://ykcomlom.en.made-in-china.co...-Cookware-Set-Lunch-Box-CL2C-DJG1813-2B-.html

In it was all the usual survival items, and the whole thing fit very nicely into a molle medic sustainment pouch. It went on my second line gear. In my trousers' thigh pocket, I had the small "Altoids"-style tin.

I still have them, not packed with my camping gear.

Nice vid. Lots and lots of stuff in that tin. I like the "medicine syringe", I never thought about something like that.

Thanks!! At least someone "appreciated" the 24 minute video and got something useful out of it. LOL ;)

I appreciate anyone who takes time to make a video like you did. Whether it's a survival tin, how to replace an oxygen sensor in a 2007 Avalon, or a recipe for chocolate coated jalapeño peppers - there is always an opportunity to learn.

Ive done specific kits before, like a fire-starting kit, sewing kit etc etc
These are easy to keep in a GHB/BOB and they stay nice and organized.

But this time Im setting out to make an 'urban day' kit
What would I need/want with me for about 8 hours in the city? What might come up in 8 hours of being in a big city that I could handle?
This has a very specific reason for assembly, a trip to DC in two months (popped into my head, why not knock it out now and evolve over the next two months), a trip that will take us through security which may or may not be very relaxed.

So here we are, an Altoids Wintergreen tin
straw with two threaded needles**
sharpie mini
compass
file
two buttons
Tylenol pills, have 5 toothpicks inside the tube too
5 bandaids
Vic classic - SMALL pair of scissors on it, very small blade, and file/screwdriver combo. In the scales are tweezers and a pen.

It fits, but isnt very snug, which is good and bad. Good because that means everything doesnt have to be 'perfect' to fit in there
Bad because it rattles a bit when walking.

Ive already decided to ditch the compass, may get rid of the file too. Probably the Vic as well
still need to do paracord
And, I thought about adding a short USB to Micro charging cable, as one of the most used tools on these sorts of trips is my cellphone
Still need to put a couple zipties in too
Also, maybe some pepto tablets

Thinking about risking a Style PS on my keychain, along with my Fenix E05 85lm light. The PS has no blade, but has tweezers, pliers, scissors, and a file/screwdriver combo.
This would allow me to get rid of the Vic, only thing Im losing then would be a blade (might get yanked in security) and the pen, but I have the sharpie.
Also frees up space in the tin, and no longer need dedicated file.

**take a straw, cut to length, heat up an end and then use pliers to press the walls together, forming a bit of a closure which is still easy to break by pressing hard on it. Then put contents inside and seal up the other end. This way I dont have needles just floating around my tin (small, easy to lose) and they wont prick me, or others, reaching in the tin. I could make this one smaller for sure

Wanted to bump this thread up.

Since my last post (I could have sworn I'd posted this already, whatever) I changed my tin a bit.
Took some things out, added some things.
...Hell, even since this pic was taken, which was about a month ago, Ive changed it a little more.

Got a piece of plastic tube from hardware store, as well as a vacuum cap and a cork and made a pill holder. Only holds 3 of the oblong Tylenol shown here, but thats plenty to get me through a rough day. Also added some toothpicks because having something stuck in your teeth while youre out is a pain.

In the pic are some alcohol swabs. They were just small swabs, about 1 inch x 1 inch. Those are gone, replaced by larger moist towelettes.

Still have the bandaids, the sharpie, the two needles with thread already on them, and a spare button.

Also added a connie and some shoelaces.

Again, this was a kit for MY needs at THIS time.

Well, this weekend I took a trip (via bus) to our nation's capital. I took out the condom, no need for that on this trip, but everything else stayed in.
Tylenol was used by me and another while we were out one day.
Shoestring was used on the bus because the pull-down sun visor wouldnt stay down.
And one of the few bandaids was given to another traveler who had a small cut on their finger.

Success.

Yall have a great day, thanks for reading my long post.

PS - the tube seen in the picture is why I was asking in another thread about carbon arrows and how large they are internally, seeing if I could cut one up for that reason.

I was using a tylenol travel tube of pills, but the lid would BARELY close, I didnt like that. So I improvised and am very pleased with my small amount of money and time spent.

A video I did about survival tins. A little long but I think worth a watch for those interested in putting one together.

Nice tin! I'm going to add the baby syringe to each bag/tin, have many left over from Mom's meds! Great idea.
