Gathering up some places to sit in some cool mountain water, maybe drink some beers, and play with the pup within an 1.5 hours of Lincoln Co. I already know a few, but seeing if anything else is out there.

If you don't mind company, any of the hundreds of pull offs on any creek up there. If you don't want crowds look at hiking in to some of the creeks.
Wilson has some big holes in the gorge. Almost always people there though. If you are not actually looking to swim, Upper Creek on Craig rd, Steel Creek toward the end of the dirt road are easy to get too.

Wilson Creek is a bit crowded. We used to hit up some of the long dirt roads off 181 that followed whatever that branch is with the primitive campsites, but those places had gotten pretty trashy and druggy last time I was there.
Agree on the crowds. I will say the sheriff's department is actively patrolling the area and it has been cleaned up quite a bit. The "Wild & Scenic" designation has garnered more attention to the crowds from the local authorities. I personally like being up on the New River in the Todd, NC area, though I have friends with acreage on the river that allows us access.
Thats Broad River at the bridge on 150 south out of Boiling Springs. Parking area on left just south of the bridge.
There are built up picnic areas, but hike down to the river and a half mile or so downstream to avoid people. Youll still occasionally get some folks down there, but theyll mostly give you your space. The are enough rocks and plenty big enough for two groups of 4-5 each to coexist peacefully.

Very little that's close to the road will be uncrowded. I had a creek I could rely on the be pretty good about any day of the year. Went up last summer and could not find a parking place. We just left. It's gotten even more crowded in the last year. If you can walk a mile or so, you can find more privacy on some trials.
