So many people have been posting their 545 ammo for sale. And posting their 74's for sale or trade and I cant figure out why. What's the deal? I always liked the 74 but just could never afford one.

Import ban on the Ammo was the reason for selling mine years ago. It use to be super cheap to shoot. I don’t know what Ammo availability is anymore.

I was on the fence. Then I fell off and got one. Just do it. Its awesome.

Know any places that do layaway that have any in stock? That's the problem I cant find anywhere that have any in stock.

Just get one used. Better when you get it in a package deal. I cant afford to buy a new one so I'm at a loss for information on those.

Same for me, I cant drop +$1k all at once, I'd have to trade something I'm guessing.

I can guarantee you, they're alot more enjoyable when you get a good deal on one. Other wise you're left wondering why the hell you dropped 1300 on a rifle that does just slightly better than the original. My good buddy gave me a hot deal on a hot mess m74 sporter built by our local ak guru. It goes bang. Ammo can be ordered online. And it came with a few mags. I ain't mad

I won't talk you out of getting one. I'll just sit back and watch the BST for when you decide to sell it in 2 weeks for less than you paid for it.....lol.
In case you havent noticed, I havent posted a gun for sale for quite some time. :D

You know ya want one!

I also wont either try to talk you into it or out of it...but Ill add why I have never been to hot and bothered about getting one.

The main attraction of the AK platform for me was how fundamentally different it was than the AR platform. Part of that being the larger caliber round. Going down to a round relatively similar to the AR leaves me just feeling like I should stick with my ARs. But if you have an absolute love for the AK platform and want a round similar to the AR, then go for it. Ammo isnt quite as cheap as .223, but it still isnt bad.

That makes a lot of sense to me when you put it like that

I gladly drank the "5.45 = master race" Kool-aid and am fully NO REGERTS for the decision. It's an impressive round with some really cool history behind it. BUT, it's also a dying round. And that means the guns, barrels, mags, gear, support, behind it are also dying. Brutally honestly, there's not much, if anything 5.45 can do that 5.56 cannot do (and usually the latter does it even better), and as we all know, the latter is a HELL of a lot more common and available. Hell, even former combloc militaries have ditched 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 for 5.56.

With all that out of the way - get off this forum and go buy one  Go spend more money than you need to, to get in the game late but while you still can. It's a blast to shoot and collect. The guns are rad. The history is compelling. 7N6 is awesome and although no longer dirt cheap, can still be bought all day for about the same price per round as commercial 7.62x39. It also has a distinctive smell when fired that makes me smile every time I pull the trigger. There are some decent commercial loads available from Academy and various online retailers (watch the AKOU comparison vids - my experiences with 5.45 largely match Rob's findings). Browse these threads and learn which guns to stay away from.

5.45 may be dying, but it's not dead yet. Add a few 74 guns, a few more mags, and a few thousand rounds of 7N6 to your arsenal and enjoy shooting it for many years to come. Just save a little for me :p

And I mean, come on, man. When every range in America is full of off-the-shelf, boring-as-hell, carbon copy clone ARs, and you pull something like THIS out of your case, you can't help but smirk all (well deservedly) arrogantly just a little bit :D

Like I said, I would have to trade something for one. I have read about the history of the round, it is a really awesome round. The gun too.
