With the rebate and low selling price over at PSA and other retailers I was thinking of grabbing one, maybe two of the little M85 .38 spcl. These would probably be knock around pieces, but may carry one, depending on how I felt about them.

So.... Talk me out of it and save me some $$$$!

Trying to get people here to talk you out of buying a gun is like asking Michael Moore to talk you out of eating a donut.

If I >were< discourage you in any way it would be to recommend just spending a little more on a Smith or a Ruger and retain some of its resale value while maintaining its utility.

Fair enough!

Seriously though, I used to stick up for taurus. Then I three in a row go back to the factory for problems, one 3 times. The last one we bought was a 38 revo that ate up its internals in about 200 rounds. Won't have one now. If you found an old pre-lock M-85 maybe...

I do have an SP101. The Taurus would be just a knock around.

And I need no help what so ever in justifying a donut! You've met me. If I can catch it, i'll eat it!

And this is what I needed to hear. Honest real world experience/opinions.

I've been eyeing the same deal and fighting the urge. I have to keep reminding myself about the Taurus 357 I bought years ago that did fine with 38s but it would consistently bind the cylinder when shooting magnums. I was never able to get it corrected so I sold it.

Just based on reputation, I wouldn't go near a new/recent Taurus. Now, my 3" Taurus model 66 I bought new in '95 has been my faithful truck gun for 22 years & pulled double duty as a nightstand gun for several years. Accurate as it needs to be, always goes bang, fun to shoot.

You could probably score a good deal on an older one, but I wouldn't touch anything they've made for the last several years.

I've got an M85 that new outta the box the cylinder would spin while the hammer was pulled all the way back! LGS said it was probably just a piece of cosmoline or something. BS!!! I had them send it back 3 times before they replaced it! Can you say split lead!? Not this boy!

Well, I think y'all just successfully talked me out of the Taurus! At least the new one any way. While they are cheap, I don't have the cash to just take a chance on getting one that may or may not work.

Good decision, don't bet your life on a piece of crap
If you look you will find a used decent (mechanically ) S&W especially in .38 (357 tend to be pricey) for as little as a new Taurus

I've sent 2 revolvers back to Taurus. Cylinders stopped turning on both. Both took over 3 months to get repaired.

Was looking for a pocket gun awhile back, and decided to give Taurus another chance. Bought a TCP 380, and it locked up before 50 shots were fired. I'm done with Taurus.

Taurus is hit and miss. I got a Taurus 1911 in a trade deal really cheap. I mainly took it because he was throwing in about 15 quality magazines. But it turned out to be a really great little shooter.

Then I've had a couple of revolvers that were junk.

Im not a Taurus fan myself but that being said I have the millenium G3 and it is an amazing little shooter no problems with it as of yet. Its my EDC gun not truck gun.

I guess I been the lucky one - I have a pt1911 9mm & a model 85UL . Both have been nothing short of perfect! Everyone that shoots the PT1911 9mm comments on how much they like it. I got it for $350 many moons ago. The 85UL had a gritty trigger when new, but spent many nights dry firing at every football & hockey player on TV - now its smooth as butter! Its well over 10 years old and full of pocket lint and has never failed with 1000's of rounds through it - even an occasional +P.

I keep hearing guys on this board say "you can't afford to go cheap". This may be one of those times. After what I've read and watched I'd spend $159 on a Hi-point before I'd buy a Taurus.

I have one of the large 8-shot 357 Taraus wheel guns, had it for... 10-15 years? Honestly can't remember when I got it. Timing is good, trigger is nice, hasn't failed me. Haven't ever shot 38s out of it, but have done a lot of lower power 357 handloads. When I was selling pistols off I kept the Taraus and sold a S&W 686+ because I didn't want two 357s... and the S&W had resale value and the Taraus didn't.

If you really want one of those really un-fun to shoot .38s, maybe find a used S&W so when you get tired of it you can resell it with less loss?

I dunno, you can go cheap and I often do. However, as soon as someone says something along the lines of "I might carry it" then it goes from a range toy where malfunctions don't matter to an actual tool that you don't want to fail. That's when you can't afford to go cheap.

You sad it all They are cheap. and I ain't talking about price

I bought a Taurus 738TCP for my wife. It went back to Taurus three times (each time after about 5 minutes of shooting). Well, twice. After the second time, I took it back to FG&G.

Hey man. I used to have that car. SOC V6 was cheap, got good mpg, decent power, and you could drive it like it was stolen because no cop would look twice at you no matter what you were up to...

I used to drive one - but then my Daddy got a job!

The old Model 85 were great revolvers. I had one that I ran several thousand rounds through and never a problem. I would not hit a bull in the arse with a new Taurus of any kind. I took side plate off of a Judge and it looked like a 10 year old did the machining work. Not a fan at all.

Had a model 92 that parts started falling off of and I had a model 85 that broke internally just like another poster said. The operative word was "had". That was years ago and there will never be a 3rd Taurus ownership experience for me.

I had a old m85 that was a good revolver but I wouldn't buy a new one.... Look at the rock island revolver I'd u wanting a cheaper revolver.

I know it's already been said but don't, under any circumstances, buy a Taurus. I purchased one of their wheel guns a few years ago and cylinder timing was off. Good thing I inspected before firing. Pretty sure it would have been a bomb in my hand.

i got late 80s 66 4" wood grips it shoots and feels like my S&W 66 a few autos i messed with always had problems as new small 38s only have the 66 no more tarus

You get what you pay for and Taurus is an example of this.
S&W or Ruger will be worth more than you paid for it in 10 years and the Taurus will be worth less than half of what you paid for it.
My dad should have bought a S&W vs the cheaper Rossi and now we have inherited a crap gun that has a cylinder that binds and it will cost too much to fix.
Think about your children and do not buy a Taurus.
