My wife and I are looking into potentially trying our hands at this next year. We want things that simulate real world scenarios. Something that can include our carry handguns, as well as ARs, or both in the same stage. I'd like to start researching then frame my questions from there. Thanks!

Sounds like you are looking for a 2 gun competition (rifle and pistol).

Interested in both. Things that my wife and I can have fun at, but also training us for real world scenarios.
Yeah the 2 gun incorporates both weapons in each stage. Shoot pistol, toss in bucket, pick up rifle. Or vice versa. They have some beginner friendly ones at @VOD Tactical . Bit of a drive from the triangle though.

Still gotta make my way through that whole thread that was linked, but I'm sure I'll have questions.

There is also this thread

I recently started going to the dprc rimfire and it feels like it's been a nice easy intro to the sport. Definitely has me wanting to branch out and try more competitions.

Much as I like the 2 gun rimfire competition, and I plan to be there Saturday, it doesn't meet the OP's stated requirement.

Think 'Hamsterdance' versus 'Call of Duty.' (Okay guys, stop laughing, you know what I meant.)

There are three different matches that get much closer to the goal at Zoo City in the next month or so.

I think rimfire is always a good place to start. It will improve many things like trigger press, transitions, sight picture acquisition, etc. All things that translate to any gun or situation.
As well as all the safety and ranges rules, etc.
It's also relatively affordable.

There is a more informal 2gun match at central carolina gun club. I believe it is full this Saturday, but it is a very good match for starting competition as some of the gear rules and whatnot are a bit more relaxed. You can always come watch one, too.

You can also start with pistol competitions like IDPA and USPSA. IDPA might be more like real world defensive scenarios, or at least should be. Around the triangle look at H2O Fowl Farms down near Dunn, Triangle Shooting Academy and OnPoint Shooting Academy indoor shoots in Raleigh, True North in Oxford, and Deep River in Sanford (no shoots in Nov-Dec).

Might be a better approach. Start some IDPA. Add carbine later and other stuff later.
Actually what I did when I fist got into centerfire matches. I still have my first match video somewhere. I show it to newbs in case they think they are the slowest person in the world.

That’s the match I was thinking of when I read the original post.

Need to come shoot that someday and make a fool of myself.
