Taming the bark of an AR pistol

A flash can, sound forwarder/linear comp, and a flash hider are going to all be better than a brake.

Between those three, noise level is going to be fairly similar. The flash can and SF/LC might have a little less concussion, but not by much.

I ran a linear comp prior to my stamp collecting and the wide open spaces it will help but anything that can bounce sound off/back will send it back at you (even in carbine lengths). I used a Griffin Minimalist Blast Shield (my son was running the can on another AR) and it also bounced back off the shoot house walls. When you’re talking 145 plus dB sound bounces off and echoes around pretty damn bad ... even the sonic crack.

@Mustang Jon I have a flash can if you want to try one. It is much more pleasant than a regular ol' flash hider.

8 inch bark is indeed impressive. I hate to think of setting one off in a hall way with No ears on...oooofffffff!
I hear everyone say this.... there’s a line to cross when it doesn’t matter. A .22 in a hall way will F your ears pretty good... ever shot a 9mm in one, or a 16” AR? It just doesn’t really matter lol. Your ears are screwed more than a cheap hooker either way. Rock on with the tiny AR IMO.

I disagree. Recently had a carpenter do some work and he was using a ramset gun firing what are essentially .22cal cartridges in a small room without any ear pro (which I would not advise). It was loud, but nowhere near as loud as an AR.

A room and a hallway are different. And of course, the 22 isn’t as loud but go shoot one in a hallway and see if your ears don’t ring like crazy.
I’ve shot weapons in houses, , vehicles, bunkers.... I don’t think the decibel difference from a 12” ar and a 16” ar are noticeable. But what do I know.

IIRC, @Wahoo95 feels the same way. My theory is that you guys have experienced sufficient hearing damage that your ability to discern decibel differences is compromised. :p

I'm such a hearing pro fanatic that I wear earmuffs when operating a cordless drill (for more than a couple of holes). Always wear hearing pro when operating a circ saw, miter saw, angle grinder.

And to me, there is a clear difference in loudness between a 16" AR and a sub-10" AR.

Yeah they're all loud with no difference to me so I guess I have lost some hearing [emoji1787][emoji1787]

I don’t think my 11.5” AR is loud. Then again I run a chain for hours on end with no ear pro so I am likely deaf and dumb. And my gas trimmer must have a suppressor or something. I run that thing 2 hours straight with zero issues. o_O

Funny story....a few weeks back I took a group of ladies shooting and introduced them to various firearms. One of them had her 20 something old son in attendance and he insisted on not wearing any ear or eye pro even when I insisted. Fast forward to the transition from the CZ Scorpion to my 11.5" AR with a muzzle break and no can mounted. I warned him that he really needed to put some ear pro on and he said again he didnt need it since he never used it when he shot his 16" M&P Sport. Well, he happened to be standing about 8ft to the right of his I'm when she cut loose on the AR and I swear I wish I'd recorded his reaction as well as everyone else out there. Between the obnoxious bark and flames shooting out the side they were all caught off guard. They all couldn't understand why with that gun they could feel the recoil throughout their entire body! He was scrambling to find something for his ears and dropped his drink trying to cover them! Lesson learned....wear ear pro!

Young, dumb and full of cum. Thought he knew everything about guns. Glad you sent some knowledge shockwaves through him.

I winced just reading that phrase!

Reminds me of the time I was at the Wake County indoor range next to a guy who was running what seemed like an entire spam can through his shortened Mosin. I'm not a violent person, but the thought of putting a round into his skull crossed my mind. And I already had doubled up ear pro, but that wasn't really enough for 7.62x54r through a shorty Mosin indoors and in the next bay.

What's funny is I knew that time would come so I was looking forward to it.

I never got to experience the bark. My first shots through my SBR were suppressed.

It's definitely not what I would call hearing safe, but there was no real bark to speak of.

I shot a 1911 to slide lock sitting under the steering wheel of a 1968 SS Chevelle and Out the passenger window. Locked in the ole memory bank.

No eyes on Battery Oaks makes you Persona Non Grata right NOW.
Same here Billy.
I've stopped everybody shooting until all eyes and ears are on and functional. I don't care whether you think you need them or not.
This also brings everybody back to attention. Quit d***ing around...you're at a gun range not a canasta tournament. Act like somebody.

eta; On point, I have linear comp's on all my AR's regardless of caliber. They work well at my outdoor range. You can especially tell the difference in reduced noise from locations not near the range.
